WRC, Portugal : 18 Juniors pour un titre

Le Championnat du monde Junior 2015 compte désormais 18 engagés. Ce week-end, la deuxième manche s’annonce palpitante entre 15 concurrents représentants 9 nationalités différentes.

La saison mondiale des Juniors a débuté au dernier Rallye Monte-Carlo et cette première manche fut remportée par le Français Quentin Gilbert devant Christian Riedemann et Ole Christian Veiby. Au classement Nation Trophy, la France est leader devant l’Italie et l’Allemagne.

Après une pause de quatre mois, la saison redémarre au Portugal où 15 des 18 inscrits au championnat sont attendus au volant de Citroën DS3 R3T Max chaussées de pneumatiques Michelin. Tous rêvent de succéder à Stéphane Lefebvre et de suivre la même carrière que Sébastien Loeb et Sébastien Ogier, champions du monde Junior en 2001 et 2008.

Quentin Gilbert arrive donc au Portugal en leader de la série. Après une saison 2014 frustrante en WRC-2 et DMack Trophy, le Vosgien espère se relancer cette année. Depuis sa victoire au Monte-Carlo, Quentin a disputé une manche du Trophée Andros et le Rallye d’Epernay.

Cinq autres pilotes tricolores sont engagés au Portugal : Pierre-Louis Loubet (fils de l’ancien pilote officiel Yves Loubet), Jean-René Perry (vainqueur Opel Adam Cup 2014), Matthieu Margaillan (5^e RC2 au Monte-Carlo), Terry Folb (3^e Citroen Racing Junior Trophy 2014) et la seule féminine du championnat, Charlotte Dalmasso.

Le Norvégien Ole Christian Veiby, 3^e Junior au Monte-Carlo et vainqueur WRC-3 en Suède, est un sérieux candidat à la victoire. Le Finlandais Henri Haapamaki avait terminé 3^e WRC-3 au Wales Rally GB 2014 et débute chez les Juniors ce week-end, de même que l’Irlandais Dean Raftery (5^e Ford Fiesta Trophy UK 2014).

Parmi les plus expérimentés, l’Italien Simone Tempestini dispute ce week-end son 11^e rallye de la saison, le Suisse Federico de la Casa participe à sa 3^e saison en WRC-3, le Britannique Osian Pryce (double vice-champion Citroën Racing Trophy UK), l’Irlandais Daniel McKenna qui a disputé sa 10^e saison, ou encore Mohamed Al-Mutawaa, pilote MERC et WRC depuis 2013.

L’Allemand Christian Riedemann (2^e au Monte-Carlo), le Français Yohann Rossel (5^e) et l’Italien Alessandro Re (6^e) n’ont pas nominé le Rallye du Portugal dans leur programme, et seront sans doute de retour au Rally Poland début juillet.

The 2015 Junior World Rally Championship has attracted 18 registered drivers, 15 of whom – representing nine different nationalities – are in Portugal this weekend.

The 2015 JWRC kicked off with January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo which was won by Frenchman Quentin Gilbert, ahead of Christian Riedemann and Ole Christian Veiby. In the Nations Trophy, France leads Italy and Germany.

After a four-month break, competition resumes in Portugal where 15 of the registered drivers will compete in Michelin-equipped Citroën DS3 R3T Maxes. They all dream of following in the footsteps of 2014 winner Stéphane Lefebvre and of enjoying the careers of Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier who claimed Junior titles in 2001 and 2008.

Frenchman Gilbert tops the provisional standings and hopes to bounce back after frustrating 2014 campaigns in the WRC2 and DMack Trophy. Since his class win on the Monte Carlo, he has contested a Trophée Andros ice race and France’s Rallye d’Epernay.

There will be five other French drivers in Portugal, namely Pierre-Louis Loubet (son of ex-factory driver Yves Loubet), Jean-René Perry (2014 Opel Adam Cup winner), Matthieu Margaillan (5^thin RC2 on the Monte Carlo), Terry Folb (3^rd, 2014 Citroen Racing Junior Trophy) and the entry’s only lady driver Charlotte Dalmasso.

Norway’s Ole Christian Veiby (3^rd JWRC, Monte-Carlo / 1^st WRC3, Sweden) is a favourite, while Finn Henri Haapamaki (3^rd WRC3, 2014 Wales Rally GB) is making his Junior debut this weekend, as is Irishman Dean Raftery (5^th, 2014 Ford Fiesta Trophy UK).

The more experienced drivers are Italian Simone Tempestini (who will be starting his 11^th rally this season), Switzerland’s Federico de la Casa (who is taking part in his third WRC3 season), Briton Osian Pryce (two-time Citroën Racing Trophy UK winner), Irishman Daniel McKenna (in his 10^thseason) and Mohamed Al-Mutawaa (MERC and WRC driver since 2013).

Germany’s Christian Riedemann (2^nd, Rallye Monte-Carlo), Frenchman Yohan Rossel (5^th) and Italian Alessandro Re (6^th) didn’t list Portugal as one of their rounds. They will be back for Poland in July.
