In 1969 Ford gifted this car to Allan Moffat, and they would get on famously. They won 101 out of 150 races and at their best held every outright touring car lap record in Australia simultaneously.

The car is the second of seven race cars produced for 1969 and was hand assembled from a kit straight from Kar Kraft. Under the hood is a 5942cc eight-cylinder Ford Boss 302, breathing through four 48 IDA Webers and putting out 485 bhp.

Moffat first met the car at JFK in New York before they returned to Australia together. Their first race would be at Sandown, where they beat Ian Geoghegan, Norm beechey and Bob Jane to take the world-first victory for a ’69 Trans Am Mustang.
Moffat kept the car for a quarter-century before selling it to David Bowden.

GET YOURSELF AN ODDBALL STATION WAGON

    by Petrolicious Productions
Get yourself an oddball station wagon
There are plenty of vintage Mercedes-Benz and big ol’ American wagons floating around the classifieds each week, so to stand out sellers have to be offering something pretty special. Though we regularly fantasize about buying a typical vintage wagon, there are certainly a number of unconventional models worthy of consideration.
It possible to buy an oddball station wagon at any price point?
    Citroën ID 19 Break

    1967 Citroën ID 19 Break
    €32,500

If you’re a fan of pastel paint (as we are), incredible design (yup), and insanely interesting interiors (ditto), it’s difficult to do better than a canary yellow Citroën ID 19 Break. This restored1976 example of the ID is basically the less expensive version of the DS—so no swivelling headlights—but it retains trick load-levelling suspension and the funkiest interior this side of the Citroën Kar-A-Sutra. Ketchup & mustard!
    1958 Chevrolet Yeoman

    1958 Chevrolet Yeoman
    $31,500

This tastefully modified Yeoman may look like a generic American wagon, but the Yeoman trim was only made in 1958 and sat at the top of the line. Originally fitted with a 6-cylinder engine, the next owner can look forward to a mildly hopped-up small block V8.

Without a price, it’s easy to let your mind run rampant at how much a very purple 1949 Bentley Mark VI “Woodie” would sell for. With a recent full restoration and absolutely amazing woodwork, this example was originally constructed by the Rippon Brothers of Huddersfield—who were Britain’s oldest coachbuilders. Likely at a price high enough to bring a nice Ferrari home, we maintain that picnics with friends are often more fun than they may seem.

When people cringe at the word “wagon”, this is not what they have in mind. What they have in mind is a wood appliqué’d Buick Century with more rust holes than port holes. This Willys is incredibly cool, restored, and at less than $27,000 a much more attractive choice than the latest wagon-in-disguise…er…”CUV”.

Dry stored since 1978, this very rare Mercedes-Benz was considered to be the “S Class” of its generation. Including an original 1949 Westfalia trailer, it seems like a reasonable price to take home a project that will probably need a thorough going-over. The ad also says it enjoyed a “celebrity original owner”—just hope his name’s not Hasselhoff.

With lines longer than the queue for Space Mountain, this finned and very Mad Men Chrysler Town & Country Newport is the perfect car to cruise in. Said to be from California, it’s one of just 1,832 for the model year and shows few blemishes and a decent amount of supporting documentation.
1999 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon STi VI

1999 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon STi VI

There’s a ton of information in this classified ad, so kudos to the seller. For our purposes, though, it’s important to note one crucial thing: these early Subaru STIs are hard to find in unmodified condition, and if you’re able to get one now and hold onto it, there’s no reason you won’t be able to enjoy a car that maintains (and likely increases) in value.
    1977 Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon
    The car:

    Seller's Info:
    1977 Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon

A very rare icon of the “Malaise Era”, it’s not every day you see a Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon—depending on your tastes, this may be a good thing. We include it as proof that you don’t need a lot of cash to bring home an interesting and easy to work on classic car. The seller states that its interior needs work, and we’d agree—spending a few thousand on personalization or restoration would go a long way with this unicorn.

WRC, Argentine 1985 : Vatanen a frôlé la mort…/ Vatanen’s brush with death

It was 30 years ago, on July 21, 1985, that Ari Vatanen survived a frightening crash during the Rally Argentina. Only two months previously, the Finn had escaped from a series of scary rolls in Corsica.
Ari’s ‘big one’ happened on the 1985 Rally Argentina’s SS2, Las Bajadas/Villa del Dique. Running third on the road, the Finn lost control of his Peugeot 205 T16 at high speed after hitting a pot hole down a fast straight.
After leaving the ground, the car landed heavily on the driver’s side before performing three rolls and essentially disintegrating. Ari was badly hurt, and his co-driver Terry Harryman was also injured, but less seriously.
The Peugeot helicopter, which was following Timo Salonen who was first on the road, was called back to assist the crew and Ari was taken to hospital in Cordoba with numerous fractures (cervical vertebra, knee, eight ribs, ankle…). He was in surgery for eight hours and received three blood transfusions. By all accounts, he was fortunate to come through.
Convinced he had contracted AIDS because of the transfusions, he subsequently suffered from a long period of depression. It took him a year to snap out of it after a visit to the 1000 Lakes Rally and also thanks to the support of Jean Todt who offered him a drive with Peugeot again.
Eighteen months after his big scare, the amiable Finn effectively took part in the 1987 Dakar which marked a turning point in his life as he went on to claim victory in the ‘Grand Raid’ version of the Peugeot 205 T16.
A few months later, he made his WRC comeback on the Safari driving a Subaru RX Turbo, before contesting the 1987 1000 Lakes Rally in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. It was his final outing with Harryman alongside.
The rest of his career was shared between cross-country rallying (Dakar wins in 1989, 1990 and 1991), the Pikes Peak Hill Climb (victory in 1988) and selected WRC outings (Mitsubishi, Subaru, Ford), although he failed to add any world class wins to his personal record.

    Triumph...
