WRC, Australie : Lefebvre remplace Ostberg / Lefebvre to replace Ostberg

Après leur accident d’hier en reconnaissances, Mads Ostberg et Jonas Andersson sont forfaits pour le Rallye d’Australie. Stéphane Lefebvre, qui devait uniquement reconnaître le parcours, sera au départ sur la DS3 WRC n°4.

Hier (mardi), dans la dernière spéciale du jour, Mads Ostberg et Jonas Andersson ont été victimes d’un accident lors des reconnaissances. Sur une piste étroite, leur Mitsubishi Lancer n’a pu éviter un camion et le choc fut particulièrement violent. L’équipage Citroën a été admis à l’hôpital pour un check-up. Mads et Jonas ont été autorisés à poursuivre les reconnaissances.

Ce matin (mercredi), le réveil a été difficile. Mads souffre de deux côtes fêlées et Jonas de multiples contusions. L’équipage Citroën a repris les recos à bord d’une voiture de remplacement, mais doit finalement déclarer forfait pour le rallye. La DS3 WRC n°4 sera pilotée par Stéphane Lefebvre.

Le Champion du monde Junior, qui devait uniquement participer aux reconnaissances, se retrouve donc au départ de son second rallye mondial au volant d’une DS3 WRC/Michelin. Pour ses débuts en World Rally Car au dernier Rallye d’Allemagne, Stéphane Lefebvre avait terminé à la 10^e place.

Le règlement WRC autorise le changement d’un équipage déjà nominé en cas de forces majeures. Au Rallye de Suède 2012, Matthew Wilson avait remplacé Nasser Al-Attiyah sur la Ford Fiesta n°6, mais avait dû garder le copilote italien Giovanni Bernacchini à ses côtés. Idem pour Elfyn Evans au Rallye d’Italie-Sardaigne 2013, qui avait dû remplacer ce même Al-Attiyah.

Ce week-end, Stéphane Lefebvre sera bien navigué par son copilote habituel, Stéphane Prévot, qui va donc prendre son 170^e départ en WRC et dépasser Daniel Elena au palmarès. Le Belge avait terminé 10^e du Rallye d’Australie 2014 aux côtés de Chris Atkinson.

Pour rester dans les stats, l’Estonien Ott Tanak fête ce week-end son 50^e rallye WRC depuis ses débuts au Rallye du Portugal 2009. Il égale ainsi le nombre de participations de Michèle Mouton. Son équipier Elfyn Evans prend quant à lui son 40^e départ en WRC.

An accident during recce has forced Mads Ostberg and Jonas Andersson to sit out this week’s Rally Australia. Stéphane Lefebvre, who had initially only planned to do the recce, will take part in the event in the N°4 DS3 WRC.

Mads Ostberg and Jonas Andersson left the road during their recce of the final stage on Tuesday’s programme. Their Mitsubishi Lancer was unable to avoid a collision with a truck through a narrow portion. The Citroën pair was taken to hospital for checks but was later authorised to continue.

Today, although Mads woke up suffering from two broken ribs and Jonas from multiple bruising, they resumed their pace note-taking in a replacement vehicle but finally decided to withdraw. Their entry in the N°4 DS3 WRC will be taken by Stéphane Lefebvre.

The reigning Junior World Champion, who had only travelled to Australia to take part in recce, will consequently take part in his second world class event in a DS3 WRC/Michelin. His recent debut in a World Rally Car in Germany harvested 10^th place.

The WRC regulations allow crew changes in the case of force majeure. In 2012, for example, Matthew Wilson replaced Nasser Al-Attiyah in the N°6 Ford Fiesta in Sweden but had to compete with the Qatari’s Italian co-driver Giovanni Bernacchini. Similarly, Elfyn Evans stood in for Al-Attiyah in Sardinia in 2013.

In Australia, however, Lefebvre will be partnered by his usual right-hand man Stéphane Prévot who will therefore start his 170^th WRC event to go one better than Daniel Elena. The Belgian came 10^th in Australia in 2014 alongside Chris Atkinson.

Staying with landmark statistics, Estonia’s Ott Tanak is starting his 50^th WRC event since his debut in Portugal in 2009. That takes him level with Michèle Mouton. Australia will be Elfyn Evans’ 40^th WRC start.

The result, the Kingston Customs Yard Built XV950 ‘The Face’ is the first Café Bob to join the Yard Built line up. As with most Yard Built projects this build has a couple of signature tweaks that identify it as a Kingston Customs build, including the cool spark plug sitting in the headstock and the yellow MX visor screen, cleverly placed behind the head light.

WRC, Australie : Trois VW en tête au Shakedown / three VWs on top on shakedown

Les Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin ont pris les trois premières places du Shakedown organisé ce matin près de Coffs Harbour. L’an passé, elles avaient signé un triplé en Australie. 

Et ça continue pour la marque Volkswagen. Après son triplé en Allemagne, VW a dominé le Shakedown du Rallye d’Australie avec Sébastien Ogier, Andreas Mikkelsen et Jari-Matti Latvala groupés en moins de 2 secondes.

Les VW Polo R WRC/Michelin ont remporté les deux dernières éditions du Rallye d’Australie. L’an passé, elles avaient signé un triplé. En 2013, elles avaient gagné 21 des 22 spéciales.

Kris Meeke a placé sa DS3 WRC à la 4e place (à 2s1 d’Ogier), pour 1/10e de seconde devant Thierry Neuville (Hyundai). Derrière, Dani Sordo (Hyundai) et Ott Tanak (Ford) ont réalisé le même chrono. L’Espagnol a devancé d’1/10e de seconde le Néo-Zélandais Hayden Paddon (Hyundai), nominé pour marquer des points constructeurs.

Malgré huit passages, Elfyn Evans (Ford) n’a pas fait mieux que le 9e meilleur temps. Stéphane Lefebvre, qui remplace au pied levé Mads Ostberg sur la DS3 WRC n°4, a signé le 10e temps à 4 secondes d’Ogier. Il n’avait parcouru que 25 km sur la terre avec cette voiture...

Après de nouveaux examens médicaux, Mads Ostberg et Jonas Andersson ont été autorisés à rentrer en Europe. Le Norvégien a laissé son casque à Stéphane Lefebvre, qui portera la combinaison de secours de Paul Nagle !

En WRC-2, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Skoda/Michelin) a réalisé le meilleur temps devant Yuri Protasov (Ford) et Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Ford).

Jeudi soir, les concurrents se rendront en centre-ville de Coffs Harbour pour une séance d’autographes suivie de la cérémonie de départ.

The three fastest shakedown times in Australia were claimed by Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin drivers. In 2014, the German make occupied first, second and third places at the finish in Coffs Harbour. 

Volkswagen has followed up its one-two-three finish in Germany with domination of Rally Australia’s shakedown leaderboard. Sébastien Ogier, Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala were covered by less than two seconds.

The last two Rally Australias were won by VW Polo R WRCs which claimed 21 of the 22 stages in 2013.

Kris Meeke was fourth in his DS3 WRC (+2.1s), ahead of Thierry Neuville (Hyundai, +2.2s). Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and Ott Tanak (Ford) posted identical times, one-tenth clear of New Zealander Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) who has been nominated as eligible to score Manufacturers’ points for Hyundai.

Despite completing eight passes, Elfyn Evans (Ford) managed no better than ninth, and the top 10 was rounded out by Stéphane Lefebvre (+4s) who is a last-minute replacement for Mads Ostberg in the N°4 DS3 WRC. The Frenchman has only 25km experience in the car on dirt.

After further checks, Ostberg and his co-driver Jonas Andersson have been authorised to fly back to Europe. The Norwegian, however, has left his helmet behind for Lefebvre who will be wearing Paul Nagle’s spare race suit!

In WRC2, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Skoda/Michelin) was fastest ahead of Yuri Protasov (Ford) and Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Ford).

This evening (Thursday), competitors will appear in the centre of Coffs Harbour for an autograph-signing session and the ceremonial start.
