FIA WEC ; TOYOTA ET MICHELIN S’IMPOSENT SOUS LE DÉLUGE À SHANGHAI / No.7 Toyota takes challenging Shanghai win

LES TOYOTA TS050 HYBRID/MICHELIN N°7(CONWAY/KOBAYASHI/LOPEZ) ET N°8 (BUEMI/ALONSO/NAKAJIMA) ONT SIGNÉ UN NOUVEAU DOUBLÉ DANS CETTE SUPERSAISON FIA WEC, SOUS LA PLUIE BATTANTE DE SHANGHAI (CHINE). MICHELIN A REMPORTÉ SA 50E VICTOIRE WEC EN LM GTE PRO AVEC L’ASTON MARTIN N°95 (SORENSEN/THIIM).

Quelques heures après avoir décroché le titre mondial WRC en Australie avec son partenaire Michelin, Toyota Gazoo Racing a signé un nouveau doublé FIA WEC aux 6 Heures de Shanghai, une course disputée exclusivement sur une piste mouillée et interrompue à plusieurs reprises (2 drapeaux rouges, 7 Safety-Cars).

Comme à Fuji le mois dernier, Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi et José-Maria Lopez ont devancé leurs équipiers Buemi/Alonso/Nakajima. Qualifiée en pole position, la Toyota N°7 remporte une seconde victoire d’affilée avec 1.419 seconde d’avance sur la N°8.

La 3e place finale est occupée par la BR1/Michelin SMP Racing N°11 (Aleshin/Petrov/Button) après une féroce bagarre avec la Rebellion/Michelin N°1 en toute fin de course. L’équipe russe décroche ainsi son 1er « vrai » podium cette saison (3e à Silverstone après le déclassement des Toyota). Les Rebellion/Michelin N°1 et N°3 complètent le top-five.

En LM GTE Pro, la Ford GT/Michelin N°66 qualifiée en pole a été victime d’un contact. Comme au Japon, les Aston Martin Vantage ont été très performantes sous la pluie grâce leurs pneus Michelin « Wet ». Marco Sorensen et Nicky Thiim (Aston Martin N°95), 7e du classement général, ont offert à Michelin sa 50e victoire dans cette catégorie en FIA WEC.

Dans la dernière demi-heure, l’Aston Martin/Michelin N°97 (3e) n’a pu résister au retour tonitruant des Porsche/Michelin N°91 (Lietz/Bruni) et N°92 (Christensen/Estre). L’Aston Martin N°97 et la Ferrari N°71 complètent le top-five.

Triplé Porsche/Michelin en LM GTE Am avec la N°77 (Ried/Andlauer/Campbell), la N°56 (Bergmeister/Lindsey/Perfetti) et la N°88 (Al Qbaisy/Pera/Cairoli).

Dans ces conditions très difficiles, Michelin a également occupé la tête de la catégorie LM P2 avec l’Oreca N°31 DragonSpeed (Gonzalez/Maldonado/Davidson) qui doit finalement se contenter de la 2e place derrière l’Oreca N°38 Jackie Chan Racing. Un second prototype équipé par Michelin (N°50, Larbre Competition) termine dans le top-six LM P2.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria take second straight win at wet Shanghai.....

Toyota Gazoo Racing took a second consecutive 1-2 finish at today’s 6 Hours of Shanghai after a challenging race held in wet conditions.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose-Maria Lopez took the chequered flag in the No.7 Toyota TS 050 HYBRID to register back-to-back victories after their Fuji success last month.

They beat the No.8 Toyota driven by Fernando Alonso, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi by just 1.14s to close to within five points of their stablemates in the title chase.

The No.8 Toyota TS 050 HYBRID claimed second after losing time midway through the race during one of the five Safety Car periods.

This cost Fernando Alonso approximately 25-seconds and allowed Kobayashi to build what turned out to be a race defining lead.

Completing the podium and registering the first overall visit to the podium for a Russian entered team was SMP Racing.

The No.11 crew of Jenson Button, Vitaly Petrov and Mikhail Aleshin fought off the No.1 Rebellion Racing crew of Andre Lotterer, Neel Jani and Bruno Senna during a race long battle.

Button celebrated his first ever WEC podium to make it two celebrations in as many weeks after he took the Super GT title in Japan last weekend.

The LMP1 privateers had their most competitive weekend of the Super Season so far after EoT modifications were completed ahead of the Shanghai event.

45,000 race fans enjoyed the Shanghai action over the weekend despite the difficult conditions ensuring that they witnessed another epic WEC encounter.

Hometown Heroes Take Famous LMP2 Win

LMP2 saw a hard-fought and popular home victory for the No.38 Jackie Chan DC Racing crew of Ho-Pin Tung, Gabriel Aubry and Stephane Richelmi.

Claiming their second victory of the season, the trio survived several technical and on-track scares to take the maximum points and displace the Signatech Alpine Matmut crew at the top of the points table.

Contending with a gear issue and also an off-track excursion for Aubry in the final hour of the race, all three headed off the opposition to send their local fans home ecstatic at an accomplished performance.

Taking their best result of the Super Season so far, Pastor Maldonado, Anthony Davidson and Roberto Gonzalez took second position after leading in the initial green flag running early in the race.

Rounding out the podium was Signatech Alpine Matmut’s Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negrao and Pierre Thiriet. Lapierre capitalised on a late incident involving TDS Racing and a GT car to snatch third position.

WRC ; Sébastien Ogier et Julien Ingrassia un sixième sacre mondial / Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia secure a sixth world title

Un pilotage mesuré jusqu'à la cinquième place du Kennards Hire Rally Australia a contrasté avec le déchirement dont ont souffert Thierry Neuville et Ott Tänak, tous deux sortis de la route en essayant de sauver leurs espoirs de titre.

Le calme d'Ogier a brillé après qu'une forte pluie a transformé les routes de terre forestières en un vrai bourbier. Il a fait un sans-faute quand Neuville et Tänak, leader samedi soir, ont rendu visite au décor des trois premières spéciales de la matinée.

Le pire était à venir. Neuville a garé sa Hyundai i20 dans l’antépénultième secteur chronométré après avoir accroché un talus et arraché la roue arrière gauche de sa Hyundai i20. Une spéciale plus tard, Tänak a percuté un arbre et la Toyota Yaris n'est pas repartie.

Ogier a pu se permettre de fêter ça dans la Power Stage finale, sachant qu'il avait le championnat en poche, pour sa dernière apparition dans une Ford Fiesta de M-Sport avant de rejoindre Citroën l'année prochaine.

« Quelle saison incroyable ! Ça a été très serré, avec des hauts et des bas. Il n'y a pas si longtemps, on se disait que le titre serait dur à remporter, mais on n'a jamais baissé les bras. Au final, on le gagne pratiquement dans la dernière spéciale. C'est une émotion très forte ! », a déclaré Ogier.

La première erreur de Tänak avait donné le commandement du rallye à son coéquipier Jari-Matti Latvala, et l'abandon de l'Estonien aentériné la première victoire du Finlandais depuis février 2017. Celui-ci préserve également son record d'une victoire au moins par saison du WRC depuis 2008.

Ce succès a également assuré le titre des constructeurs à Toyota Gazoo Racing, pour sa seconde saison en WRC après 17 ans d'absence.

« Cela a été trop long, presque deux très longues années. Je perdais l’espoir que je pourrais gagner un rallye mais ces conditions piégeuses sont allées dans mon sens », a dit Latvala, qui a triomphé avec 32''5 d'avance.

Hayden Paddon a survécu au carnage de ce dimanche pour prendre la deuxième place sur sa i20, et le leader au soir de la première étape, Mads Østberg, a complété le podium avec une Citroën C3 – bien qu'ayant heurté un arbre et presque perdu le panneau de portière arrière droit. Le Norvégien a fini 19''7 plus loin.

Esapekka Lappi s'est classé quatrième sur une autre Yaris, Elfyn Evans compétant le top 6 derrière son équipier Ogier.

Craig Breen a visité les bas-côtés pas moins de cinq fois en six spéciales, mais il a terminé septième, Teemu Suninen s'étant retiré avant la dernière spéciale en raison d'un impact sur sa Fiesta contracté dans la précédente.

Le vainqueur du WRC 2 Alberto Heller, le champion d'Australie Steve Glenney et Jourdan Serderidis ont clôturé le top 10

A composed drive to fifth at Kennards Hire Rally Australia was in marked contrast to the heartbreak suffered by Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak, who both crashed whilst trying to keep their hopes alive.  

Ogier’s calmness shone through after heavy rain transformed the gravel forest roads into a muddy mess. He was faultless while both Neuville and overnight leader Tänak escaped brushes with the scenery during the morning’s opening three speed tests.

Worse was to follow. Neuville parked his Hyundai i20 three stages from the finish after swiping a bank and ripping a rear wheel from his Hyundai i20. In the next test Tänak slithered into a tree and his Toyota Yaris ground to a halt with no drive.  

Ogier could afford a celebratory drive through the final Power Stage in the knowledge the championship was already secured in his final appearance in M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta before switching to Citroën in 2019.

“It’s been an incredible season, so close. Not so long ago we were thinking it was going to be tough to grab this title but we never gave up. We gave everything, with a fantastic team behind us who kept fighting and in the end we grabbed it in the last rally. It’s so emotional,” said Ogier.

Tänak’s first trip into the trees handed the lead to team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala and the Estonian’s early exit confirmed a first victory since February 2017 for the Finn. It also preserved his record of winning a WRC round in every season since 2008.

His win also secured the manufacturers’ title for Toyota Gazoo Racing in its second season back in the WRC after a 17-year absence.

“It has been too long, almost two very long years. I was losing hope that I would win a rally but these tricky conditions went my way,” said Latvala, who triumphed by 32.5sec.

Hayden Paddon survived Sunday’s carnage to claim second in an i20, with first leg leader Mads Østberg filling the podium in a Citroën C3, despite hitting a tree and peeling the rear right door panel off his car. The Norwegian was a further 19.7sec back.

Esapekka Lappi finished fourth in another Yaris with Elfyn Evans filling the top six behind team-mate Ogier.

Craig Breen visited the scenery a remarkable five times in six stages but survived to finish seventh after Teemu Suninen retired his Fiesta before the final test following an impact in the previous stage.    

WRC 2 winner Alberto Heller, Australian champion Steve Glenney and Jourdan Serderidis completed the leaderboard.

The headlines from Qualifying following a close and exciting session in which the top 5 LMP1 cars – representing three different teams using both Hybrid and Non-Hybrid technology – were separated by just 1.2 seconds, much closer than seen previously.

The qualifying results are a clear indication that the work being carried out by the regulators on Equivalence of Technology is paying dividends.

In LMGTE Pro, just 0.8 seconds separated the first 9 in class, with four different manufacturers filling the first four places.
