Day 2’s schedule in Wales is very tight but we still managed to reach the regroup and remote service in Newtown in time to gather the drivers’ impressions after this morning’s action.
It was a pleasure to see Newtown’s busy main street closed to traffic to welcome the crews for the 20-minute regroup before the lunchtime service halt a few hundred yards away in a nearby car park.
“It was a challenging morning with grip levels changing all the time,” reported Ogier. “It was a good loop for me, but I’m a bit surprised by the gap I have opened up. On paper, running first on the road would have been better today, but it was nice to get a look at Jari-Matti’s lines…”
Latvala certainly hasn’t been helped by being the first driver into the stages but his perseverance was rewarded with the fastest time on SS6 which took him back to second overall. “I’ve never really been in phase with the grip levels, although I felt better on Sweet Lamb (SS5),” said VW’s Finn. “I always tend to have a good feeling on Myherin [SS6], too, so I was glad to win that one, but it was still tough.
After his strong start yesterday evening, Thierry lost some of his momentum on SS6 and has fallen from overnight second to third. “I lost confidence on this morning’s last stage after I found myself losing traction when I wasn’t expecting it. It took time to adapt. I was a little surprised by the seconds I dropped Sweet Lamb [SS5]. Maybe the others found a short cut?”
The provisional top six at the lunchtime break was rounded off by Mads Ostberg (Ford, +57.4s), who has moved up to fourth, Evgeny Novikov (Ford, +1m7.6s) and Andreas Mikkelsen (VW, +1m8.8s).
Two Citroën stars went missing this morning after accidents. Robert Kubica rolled out of the event at a slow-speed left hairpin on SS4, while Mikko Hirvonen rolled at high speed two stages later. Both crews are unhurt. The French make’s morning was salvaged by a fastest time for Dani Sordo who is 15th overall. He would have been seventh without the five-minute penalty he was handed before the start.
Local hero Elfyn Evans (8th) narrowly leads the WRC2 standings ahead of Finland’s Jari Ketomaa, with Mark Higgins (who used to compete against Elfyn’s dad, Gwyndaf!) in third. The top seven runners in the class are Ford drivers.
The comfortable leader in WRC-3 is Frenchman Quentin Gilbert (Citroën). Keith Cronin has retired, but Sébastien Chardonnet only has to reach the finish to secure the 2013 title.

Sur le papier, être premier sur la route aurait dû être un avantage pour Jari-Matti. Pour moi, 2e, c’était parfait pour surveiller ses traces. »
Latvala n’a finalement pas tiré profit de sa position d’ouvreur, mais le Finlandais a tout de même signé le meilleur temps dans l’ES6 pour prendre la 2e place du général : « Je ne me suis jamais senti à l’aise avec le grip dans l’ES4, c’était un peu mieux dans Sweet Lamb (ES5). J’ai toujours eu un bon feeling avec Myherin (ES6), alors je suis heureux de l’avoir remportée, mais c’était dur. »
Après un bon départ hier soir, Thierry Neuville a perdu le rythme dans l’ES6 et pointe à la 3e place. « Je n’avais pas confiance, je n’avais pas de motricité quand il m’en fallait. J’ai dû m’adapter. J’ai été un peu surpris d’avoir perdu autant dans l’ES5. Ils ont peut-être trouvé une coupe ? »
Le top-six provisoire est complété par Mads Ostberg (Ford, +57s4), Evgeny Novikov (Ford, +1min07s6) et Andreas Mikkelsen (VW, +1min08s8).

Il a signé le meilleur temps dans l’ES5. Il est 15e et pourrait pointer à la 7e place sans une pénalité de 5 minutes.
Le Gallois Elfyn Evans (Ford, 8e) est leader en WRC-2 avec 9s5 d’avance sur le Finlandais Jari Ketomaa (Ford R5) et 26s3 sur Mark Higgins (Ford R5) qui avait l’habitude de se battre contre son père, Gwydaf. Les Ford Fiesta R5 occupent les sept premières places de catégorie.
