Round four of the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship also provides the setting for the first gatherings of the WRC-3, the Junior WRC and the Drive DMack Trophy.
Of the 15 crews entered for the two-wheel drive car-based WRC-3, 14 are also registered for the Junior WRC which is this year open to drivers aged under 26 competing in Michelin-equipped Citroën DS3 R3s.
Of these 14, there are some familiar and less familiar names. The former category includes Germany’s Christian Riedemann, Frenchman Stéphane Lefebvre (who is also chasing this year’s European Junior title), Molly Taylor from Australia, the Czech Republic’s Jan Cerny, Romanian citizen Simone Tempestini, Slovakian Martin Koci and Briton Alastair Fisher who have already carved out a place in the sport. We will naturally also keep a close eye on the performances of their less well-known rivals, however.
France’s Quentin Gilbert has entered the WRC-3, too, but he is not tackling the Junior series since he is driving a Ford Fiesta R2 in the Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy which is run jointly by the tyre firm of the same name and M-Sport. The original 24-strong entry was whittled down to 13 drivers who were given a guided tour of the British team’s facilities by Malcolm Wilson himself in March.
This competition also features some familiar names, like Vatanen (Max) and de Mevius (Ghislain), as well as experienced drivers like Spaniards José Suarez and Yeray Lemes, Estonia’s Sander Pärn, Norway’s Marius Aasen and Tom Cave from Great Britain. Meanwhile, the Lebanon’s Nicolas Amiouni will be co-driven by Carlos del Barrio.
Both the Junior-WRC and the Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy kick off in Portugal and they will also ‘clash’ in Poland, Finland and France. The Ford Fiesta R2 brigade will end their season in Spain, while the final outing for the Citroën DS3 R3/Michelin runners is Wales Rally GB. The top prize in both is an R5 drive in 2015.

Parmi ces 14 pilotes, quelques noms célèbrent et d’autres qui aspirent à le devenir. L’Allemand Christian Riedemann, le Français Stéphane Lefebvre (également candidat chez les Juniors en Championnat d’Europe), l’Australienne Molly Taylor, le Tchèque Jan Cerny, le Roumain d’adoption Simone Tempestini, le Slovaque Martin Koci ou encore le Britannique Alastair Fisher ont déjà « roulé leur bosse » dans la discipline. On suivra évidemment les prestations des autres prétendants.
Le Français Quentin Gilbert est lui aussi engagé en WRC-3, mais pas au championnat Junior car il pilotera une Ford Fiesta R2 dans le cadre du Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy. Pour disputer cette série, organisée cette année par le manufacturier de pneumatiques et M-Sport, 13 candidats ont été sélectionnés parmi 24 demandes. Les heureux élus ont d’ailleurs été invités à visiter les installations de M-Sport mi-mars avec le boss, Malcolm Wilson.
Là aussi, on retrouve quelques noms connus du rallye, comme Vatanen (Max) et De Mevius (Ghislain). Le plateau du Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy est très, très relevé : outre Quentin Gilbert, les Espagnols José Suarez et Yeray Lemes, l’Estonien Sander Pärn, le Norvégien Marius Aasen ou encore le Britannique Tom Cave ont déjà fait leur preuve dans la discipline. Le Libanais Nicolas Amiouni sera copiloté par Carlos del Barrio.
Junior-WRC et Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy débutent au Rallye du Portugal ce week-end. Ces deux séries se retrouveront en Pologne, Finlande et en France. Les Ford Fiesta R2 termineront leur saison en Espagne et les Citroën DS3 R3/Michelin au Wales Rally GB. A noter que ces deux championnats offrent des volants en R5 pour 2015 à leurs lauréats.
