WRC, Espagne, étape 2 : Ogier toujours en tête / Ogier still in command

Jari-Matti Latvala a signé quatre meilleurs temps aujourd’hui, mais son équipier Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) a stabilisé l’écart à une trentaine de secondes avant la dernière étape et son probable couronnement demain après-midi.

L’étape asphalte proposée aujourd’hui par les organisateurs, avec une longue spéciale de 50 km pour fêter la 50^e édition du RallyRACC-Rally de Espana, n’a pas modifié le classement entre les deux pilotes Volkswagen, Sébastien Ogier et Jari-Matti Latvala.

Leader avec 36.6 secondes hier à l’issue de l’étape sur terre, le Français compte ce soir 27s3 d’avance sur Latvala et n’est plus qu’à 72,06 km d’un second titre mondial d’affilée.

Comme il l’avait annoncé, Jari-Matti Latvala a attaqué fort aujourd’hui sur les spéciales asphalte catalanes qu’il affectionne tant. Le Finlandais a remporté les trois premières spéciales du jour, grappillant à chaque fois quelques maigres secondes que son équipier voulait bien lui accorder. Car Seb Ogier, qui partait derrière lui aujourd’hui, était calé sur les splits de Jari-Matti et contrôlait. Dans l’après-midi, le champion du monde a d’ailleurs mis un coup d’accélérateur dans le second passaged’Escaladei(ES11) pour repasser au-dessus des 30 secondes d’avance.

S’il n’a pu se rapprocher du leader, Jari-Matti Latvala a au moins sécurisé la 2^e place. Car hier soir, Latvala, Ostberg, Mikkelsen et Hirvonen étaient groupés en moins de 5 secondes. L’asphalte fut bénéfique à un autre Finlandais, Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) qui s’est installé sur le podium provisoire après un super chrono dans l’ES9. Mads Ostberg (4^e, Citroën) est désormais à 28s4, sous la menace de Dani Sordo (5^e, Hyundai) qui a réduit l’écart avec le Norvégien de 47.7 à 24 secondes.

Journée difficile pour Andreas Mikkelsen, contraint de changer une roue dans l’ES11. Le pilote VW est désormais 7^e, à seulement 12.1 secondes de Thierry Neuville (6^e, Hyundai). La journée fut également délicate pour Kris Meeke (Citroën), qui a tapé une pierre dans le premier virage de l’ES9, et pour Robert Kubica (Ford), transmission cassée avant l’ES8 et roue arrachée dans l’ES11. Martin Prokop (Ford), Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) et Yuriy Protasov (Ford) complètent le top-ten provisoire devant Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford/Michelin), toujours leader en WRC-2.

Julien Maurin (2^e, Ford) est à plus d’une minute du Qatari qui devrait réaliser une belle opération au championnat WRC-2 avant le Wales Rally GB. Après s’être retiré hier (capteur moteur), Sébastien Chardonnet (Citroën) a encore abandonné ce matin (amortisseurs).

En Fiesta Trophy, Tom Cave est toujours en tête devant Nil Solans (+1min01s7) et Szymon Kornicki (+6min07s). Son challenger pour le titre, Sander Pärn, est 5^e à plus de 7 minutes. Demain, le Britannique pourrait donc remporter une saison 2015 en WRC-2. Victime d’une sortie de route hier, Quentin Gilbert a remporté toutes les spéciales du jour.

Demain, la dernière étape du RallyRACC-Rally de Espana débutera aux aurores - nouvelle heure d’hiver - avec deux spéciales à disputer deux fois.

Today’s asphalt action in Spain failed to change the order at the very top of the leaderboard, despite two visits to an awesome 50km stage to celebrate the RallyRACC-Rally de Espana’s fiftieth edition.

Ogier’s overnight lead of 36.6s over Latvala has been whittled down to 27.3s this evening, but the Frenchman looks reasonably safe with 72 competitive kilometres remaining.

Latvala kept his promise and pushed all day, winning all the morning’s stages to edge closer to his team-mate. But Ogier had the benefit of the Finn’s split times and was able to adjust his pace accordingly. Even so, the defending champion made a special effort on Escaladei 2 (SS11, 50km) to re-establish his cushion at more than 30 seconds.

Although unable to pressurise his team-mate, Latvala seems to be heading for second place.

This morning, Latvala, Mads Ostberg, Andreas Mikkelsen and Mikko Hirvonen were all covered by less than five seconds, but it’s the latter – another Finn – who has his foot on tonight’s provisional podium, helped by an assertive performance on Escaladei 1 (SS9). Ostberg (Citroën) follows in fourth spot (28.4s behind Hirvonen) but is under threat from local hero Dani Sordo (5^th, Hyundai) who has closed the gap to the Norwegian from 47.7 to 24.0 seconds.

It’s been a tough day for Mikkelsen who had to change a wheel on SS11. That has relegated VW’s Norwegian to seventh place, 12.1s short of sixth-placed Thierry Neuville (Hyundai).

Kris Meeke (Citroën) encountered more woes when he hit a stone on the first corner of SS9, while Robert Kubica ripped a wheel off his Ford on SS11 after suffering rear transmission trouble all morning. Martin Prokop (Ford), Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) and Yuriy Protasov (Ford) round off the top 10, followed by the WRC-2 front-runner Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford/Michelin).

Julien Maurin (Ford) is second in WRC-2, more than a minute behind the Qatari who will be glad to score maximum points ahead of the class’s final clash in Wales. After retiring on Friday (engine sensor), Sébastien Chardonnet (Citroën) was eliminated again today (dampers).

The Fiesta Trophy leader is still Tom Cave, ahead of Nil Solans (+1m1.7s) and Szymon Kornicki (+6m7s). Fellow title hopeful Sander Pärn is fifth, more than seven minutes adrift, which means Cave could have a WRC-2 programme for 2015 in his pocket by tomorrow afternoon… After crashing yesterday, Quentin Gilbert won all today’s stages in the competition.

The final leg of the 2014 RallyRACC-Rally de Espana kicks off at dawn with a menu of two asphalt stages to be contested twice each.
