Ott Tanak et son copilote Raigo Molder sont sortis indemnes d’un spectaculaire accident dans l’ES3 où leur Ford Fiesta RS WRC a plongé dans une retenue d’eau près du départ.
Ce matin, l’Estonien a quitté le parc d’assistance de Leon en 7e position pour prendre le départ de l’ES3, Los Mexicanos, à 9h20. Deux minutes plus tard, l’équipe M-Sport a perdu tout contact avec la Fiesta n°6…
Aucun temps intermédiaire n’est apparu sur les écrans de contrôle et à l’arrivée de la spéciale, aucune information non plus. Hayden Paddon, qui s’élançait derrière Tanak, n’a vu aucune trace sur la piste, ni voiture, ni équipage. Même chose pour Kris Meeke et Dani Sordo…
Après de très longues minutes d’attente, c’est sur Twitter que M-Sport a confirmé que les deux Estoniens étaient OK. « C’est arrivé au km 2.6 », explique Malcolm Wilson, patron du team britannique. « Nous avons subitement perdu toute communication et tout signal GPS. L’organisateur a rapidement envoyé un hélicoptère sur zone qui n’a rien vu non plus. En regardant la spéciale en détails, on s’est aperçu qu’elle longeait un lac à cet endroit. On a imaginé le pire. »
L’organisateur a stoppé la spéciale après Bertelli, à 9h40, et une voiture est partie à la recherche de l’équipage depuis le départ. Ott et Raigo étaient au bord de la piste, sains et saufs. La Ford, quant à elle, était 4 mètres en contrebas, au fond d’une retenue d’eau. « Ils ont heureusement pu sortir de l’auto avant qu’elle ne sombre complètement », poursuit Malcolm.
Choqués et détrempés, Ott et Raigo sont directement rentrés à leur hôtel avant de passer des examens médicaux de routine et d’aller rassurer leur équipe au parc d’assistance « Tout s’est passé si vite », racontait Ott en regardant sa sortie de route sur un ordinateur. « Heureusement, on a pu se détacher dès que la voiture a plongé dans l’eau. Je suis sorti en premier et on voit clairement que je nage très bien ! Raigo a été retenu par la connexion de son casque. En bon copilote, il n’a pas oublié de prendre son cahier de notes !
Quant à la Ford Fiesta, des plongeurs vont tenter d’accrocher un câble pour la sortir de l’eau… Le châssis n°29 avait commencé sa carrière par un podium ici au Mexique en 2012…

This morning, the Estonian youngster was the seventh driver to pull out of service en route for SS3 (‘Los Mexicanos’) which he started at 9:20am. Two minutes later, M-Sport lost all contact with the N°6 Fiesta…
There were no split times on our monitors and no information about the pair’s disappearance at the Stop Control either. Hayden Paddon, who was the next driver into the stage, didn’t see any indication that Tanak had been off. Nor did Kris Meeke or Dani Sordo…
After a long wait, M-Sport tweeted that the crew was okay. “At Km2.6, we suddenly lost contact with them,” said team boss Malcolm Wilson. “There was no tracker signal and the organisers sent a helicopter to look for the car, but there was no sign of it. When we took a close look at the map, we saw there was a lake beside the road, and that really scared us.”
The organisers halted the stage at 9:40am - just after Bertelli - and a vehicle was despatched to hunt for the crew. Happily, they were located by the side of the road, in perfect health. The Ford was four metres off the road under water, however. “Thankfully, they managed to escape before it sank completely,” added Wilson.
Shocked and soaked, Ott and Raigo returned directly to their hotel before undergoing a routine medical check. They were soon back at the service park.
“It all happened so quickly,” related Ott as he watched video footage of the incident. “We managed to unbuckle our harnesses as soon as the car hit the water. I was out first and you could see that I’m a good swimmer! Raigo had to disconnect his helmet from the intercom. He’s a good co-driver, though, because he didn’t forget to recover his pace note book!”
As for their Ford Fiesta, divers are going to attempt to winch it free of the water.
For information, the same chassis (N°29) kicked off its career with a podium finish in Mexico in 2012.
