WRC, Rally Poland : Objectif WRC-3 pour Renault/ Renault looking for WRC3 honours

Si Volkswagen, Hyundai et Citroën sont officiellement représentés en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA, n’oublions pas Skoda et Renault qui engagent des voitures officielles (ou semi-officielles) en WRC-2 et WRC-3.

Quelle que soit la catégorie, l’engagement d’un constructeur automobile en rallye est à saluer et à encourager. Ce week-end, Renault Sport Technologies – la branche compétition du constructeur français – aligne une Clio R3T en catégorie WRC-3 pour l’équipage italien Andrea Crugnola/Michele Ferrara. L’auto est préparée par l’équipe espagnole ASM H. Motorsport et chaussée de pneumatiques Michelin.

L’objectif de Renault Sport Technologies est ambitieux : décrocher le titre mondial en catégorie WRC-3 (2-roues motrices) et concurrencer les nombreuses Citroën DS3 R3T engagées à la fois en championnat du monde Junior (J-WRC) et en WRC-3. La Clio R3T (moteur 1600 cm³ turbo) a été homologuée et lancée l’an passé.

Pour atteindre cet objectif, Renault Sport Technologies a misé sur l’Italien Andrea Crugnola, vice-Champion d’Europe Junior des Rallyes 2014, un des meilleurs espoirs transalpins. Né à Varese en 1989, Andrea a débuté par le karting avant de choisir le rallye et de faire ses classes en Championnat d’Italie au volant de différentes voitures. C’est d’ailleurs sur une Renault Clio qu’il avait débuté en 2007.

A 26 ans, Andrea a remporté le Trophy Twingo R2 2013, après une campagne en Citroën Racing Trophy 2012 et une saison mondiale en WRC Academy 2011 (6^e). L’an passé, au volant d’une Peugeot 208 R2/Michelin, Andrea a terminé dauphin de Stéphane Lefebvre en Championnat d’Europe des Rallyes FIA (2 victoires).

Son programme 2015 comprend six (ou sept) épreuves mondiales et a débuté au Rallye du Portugal où l’ACI – la fédération italienne qui soutient Crugnola – avait organisé une petite conférence de presse. Andrea a terminé 6^e de la catégorie WRC-3. En Sardaigne, la pression était encore plus forte sur le pilote de Varèse qui a conclu à la 2^e place après un souci de radiateur.

Au départ du Rally Poland, Andrea Crugnola est 3^e du championnat WRC-3 derrière le Norvégien Ole-Christian Veiby et Quentin Gilbert. Le Finlandais Teenu Suninen (vainqueur en Sardaigne) est 4^e à seulement un point. Au classement Teams, Renault Sport Technologies figure au 2^erang.

Après la pause estivale, la saison reprendra en Allemagne, avant le Tour de Corse, le Rally Catalunya et peut-être le Wales RallyGB si le titre WRC-3 est à la portée du pilote italien et du constructeur français.

Avec la Clio R3T, Renault Sport Technologies organise cette année plusieurs trophées nationaux. Les lauréats se retrouveront pour une grande finale au Rallye Monte-Carlo 2016.

The aim of Renault Sport Technologies is to rival the many Citroën DS3 R3Ts entered in the Junior-WRC and WRC3 championships and attempt to win the latter title (two-wheel drive). The Clio R3T (1600cc turbo) was homologated and introduced last year.

To help its bid, Renault Sport Technologies has chosen Andrea Crugnola, 26, the 2012 Junior-ERC runner-up. Born in Varese in 1989, he started in karting before switching to the Italian Rally Championship in a variety of cars, beginning with a Clio in 2007.

Andrea won the 2013 Twingo R2 Trophy after a season in the Citroën Racing Trophy (2012) and a year in the WRC Academy in 2011 (6^th). In 2014, he steered a Peugeot 208 R2/Michelin to second place behind Stéphane Lefebvre in the Junior-ERC (two wins).

Andrea’s 2015 programme includes six or seven WRC rounds and kicked off in Portugal where he came sixth in WRC3. There was extra pressure on his shoulders in Sardinia where he came second despite a radiator problem.

Prior to Poland, Andrea was third in the WRC3 standings, behind Norway’s Ole-Christian Veiby and Frenchman Quentin Gilbert. Finn Teenu Suninen (Sardinia winner) is fourth, just one point behind. Renault Sport Technologies is second in the Teams’ championship.

After the summer break, Andrea’s programme will resume in Germany, Corsica, Catalonia and, possibly, Wakes if a WRC3 title is a realistic possibility for the Italian or French carmaker.

The Clio R3T stars in several one-make championships at national level and the different winners will gather for an international final on the 2016 Rallye Monte-Carlo.
