The champion matches the best winning streak in WorldSBK history
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) has made history once again at the Circuito San Juan Villicum, winning the first ever race of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship on South American soil in authoritative fashion. Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and a scintillating Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) completed the Race One podium. With Rea’s win, Kawasaki have now officially won the manufacturers title for the fourth year in a row.
After being clearly outpaced in qualifying by the veteran Italian rider, Rea shot out with a vengeance at the lights, taking the clean line through turns 1 and 2 and quickly opening a gap with the riders behind. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) quickly moved into third, with good starts from Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) also pushing them up the ranks. There was disappointment for the home fans however, as Leandro Mercado (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) crashed out whilst riding inside the top ten.
Rea’s prediction on Friday was that the race would be decided inside the last 3-4 laps, with big questions marks over how the World Superbike machines would respond to 21 laps around the pristine Argentinian track. But if anything, the champion was more dominant than ever here, riding at a breathtakingly consistent pace with barely any laps above the 1’40 benchmark, even in the final laps of the race.
With Rea untouchable and Melandri sitting comfortably in second, all eyes were set on the scrap for third position. There’s no lack of overtaking spots at the stunning Argentinian circuit, and that showed in the first race held here: Laverty moved past Sykes in lap 5 on the back straight, whilst a fourway tussle behind for fifth saw Lowes fall back behind Razgatlioglu, Davies and Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) in short succession.
The four caught up to Laverty and Sykes shortly after: the Turkish rookie bested Sykes in lap 13 and the Aprilia man one lap later, with Davies crashing and skidding out as he also attempted to pass Sykes, with raindrops making an appearance at the midway point of Race One.
With Rea crossing the line a full nine seconds ahead of Melandri, a fantastic Razgatlioglu managed to keep hold of third and clinch his second World Superbike podium position, with Fores climbing to fourth in the penultimate lap. Laverty was fifth at the flag, with Sykes behind in sixth and Lowes crossing the line in seventh.
A difficult race for Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) saw him cross the line in eighth position, with Loris Baz (GULF Althea BMW Racing Team) managing to outsmart Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) at the final turn to steal ninth position.
Special mention for the three WorldSBK debutants here in Argentina: Florian Marino (TripleM Honda World Superbike Team) met the flag in 11th position, with Maximilian Scheib (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) in 13th and Gabriele Ruiu (Team Pedercini Racing) in 14th, making the 18-year-old Italian the youngest point scorer in the championship’s history.

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) a une nouvelle fois écrit une page d'Histoire, ce samedi, sur le Circuito San Juan Villicum, en signant une victoire autoritaire lors de la toute première course que le Championnat MOTUL FIM World Superbike disputait en Amérique du Sud. Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) et un Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) épatant complètent le podium de la Course 1, alors que grâce à la victoire de Rea, Kawasaki fête officiellement son quatrième titre constructeurs consécutif.
Battu en qualifications par Melandri, Rea a pris sa revanche dès l'extinction des feux. En prenant la meilleure trajectoire dans les deux premiers virages, le Nord-Irlandais s'est emparé des commandes de la course et s'est rapidement détaché des pilotes qui le suivaient. Un peu plus loin, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) s'est très vite hissé à la troisième place, alors qu'Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) et Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) se distinguaient eux aussi par de bons départs qui leur permettaient de grimper au classement. Ce début de course était toutefois décevant pour les fans argentins, qui assistaient à la chute de Leandro Mercado (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) alors que leur héros se trouvait dans le Top 10.
Vendredi, Rea prédisait que la course se déciderait dans les trois ou quatre derniers tours, son interrogation portant sur la capacité des motos à tenir 21 tours sur une piste aussi neuve. Mais ce samedi le champion a dominé l'épreuve comme jamais, affichant un rythme incroyablement constant qui ne l'a vu presque jamais passer sous la barre des 1'40, et ce même dans les derniers tours.
Rea intouchable et Melandri confortablement installé à la deuxième place, tous les regards étaient braqués sur la lutte pour la troisième position. Le circuit argentin ne manque pas de points de dépassement et cette première course en a apporté la démonstration : Laverty a passé Sykes dans la ligne droite de retour dans le cinquième tour, tandis qu'une bagarre pour la cinquième place opposait quatre pilotes et voyait Lowes se faire dépasser en peu de temps par Razgatlioglu, Davies et Xavi Forés (Barni Racing Team).
Peu de temps après, ce groupe de quatre pilotes rattrapait Laverty et Sykes. Le rookie turc prenait alors l'avantage sur Sykes dans le 13e tour, avant de se défaire du pilote Aprilia un tour plus tard. Quant à Davies, il a quitté cette bagarre en chutant alors qu'il tentait à son tour de passer Sykes peu après l'apparition de quelques gouttes de pluie.
Rea a finalement passé la ligne d'arrivée avec neuf secondes d'avance sur Melandri. Derrière eux, un formidable Razgatlioglu a réussi à conserver la troisième place, ce qui lui vaut de signer son deuxième podium en World Superbike. Forés s'est quant à lui hissé à la quatrième place dans l'avant-dernier tour. Laverty obtient la cinquième position, suivi par Sykes et Lowes.
Au terme d'une course difficile, Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) a passé la ligne d'arrivée en huitième position. Loris Baz (GULF Althea BMW Racing Team) a pour sa part réussi à déposséder Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) de la neuvième place dans le dernier virage.
Mention spéciale pour trois débutants, ici en Argentine : Florian Marino (TripleM Honda World Superbike Team) a rallié l'arrivée en 11e position, tandis que Maximilian Scheib (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) s'est classé 13e et Gabriele Ruiu (Team Pedercini Racing) 14e, ce dernier devenant par ailleurs à 18 ans le plus jeune pilote à marquer des points dans l'Histoire du championnat.
