XTrial: Winning start for Bou / Bou débute en beauté

Toni Bou (Montesa Michelin) the reigning X Trial champion had a great start in the 2014 World Championship, as he won the first round of the series in Sheffield (Great Britain).

Champion du Monde de X Trial en titre, Toni Bou (Montesa Michelin) a bien débuté la campagne 2014 en remportant la première des six épreuves du championnat, disputée à Sheffield (Grande Bretagne).

With a new race format including head to head races, the qualifying stages didn’t offered any surprise as all the favourites qualified for the semi finals; Adam Raga (Gas Gas) was the first top rider to be eliminated in the next stage, as Albert Cabestany (Sherco Michelin) beats him.

Bou, Cabestany, Jeroni Fajardo (Beta Michelin) and Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa Michelin) were the four finalists, and once more the event turned in to duel between Bou and Cabestany; the Sherco rider put some pressure on his rival as he cleaned the two last sections, but Bou who was the last to race delivered a solid ride to win this opening round, followed by Cabestany and Fajardo who beats Fujinami by two points for the third position. The next round will take place in Marseille on the 25^th of January.

Etrennant une nouvelle formule de course, avec une série de duels, les qualifications n’allaient pas apporter de surprises avec les victoires des favoris ; Adam Raga (Gas Gas) devait malheureusement se retirer à l’issue des demies finales, après avoir été battu par Albert Cabestany (Sherco Michelin). Bou, Cabestany, Jeroni Fajardo (Beta Michelin) et Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa Michelin) se retrouvaient donc en finale, avec cette fois les zones prises à l’envers.

Très vite c’est un duel entre Bou et Cabestany qui monopolisait l’attention du public, Cabestany poussant le champion en titre dans ses derniers retranchements en terminant les deux dernières zones à zéro ; mais Bou s’appliquait et ne marquait lui aussi aucune pénalité, s’imposant donc à Cabestany et Fajardo qui privait Fujinami pour deux petits points. La prochaine étape se tiendra à Marseille dans trois semaines.

Rallye Dakar : Carlos Sousa claims first stage / Carlos Sousa premier leader

Carlos Sousa’s win on the first competitive stage of the 2014 Dakar has put the Chinese carmaker Haval at the top of the leaderboard! Sousa was joined at the sharp end of today’s order by Mini ALL4 Racing representatives Terranova, Al-Attiyah and Roma, while Sainz and Peterhansel were fifth and sixth respectively. Robby Gordon and Giniel de Villiers have both lost time already.

The twisty, rocky trails near Cordoba played into the hands of the nimble Haval H8/Michelin (based on the BMW X3 CC) which caused something of a sensation with Carlos Sousa in command. The Portuguese driver claimed the opening stage of this year’s Dakar 2014 to beat a trio of Mini ALL4 Racings, the fastest of which was that of Argentina’s Orlando Terranova who finished just 11 seconds adrift.

It didn’t take Nasser Al-Attiyah long to familiarise himself with his new car since he completed the 180km stage in third place, 47 seconds behind Sousa and 28s clear of fourth-placed Spaniard Nani Roma. Fifth spot went to Carlos Sainz (SMG buggy, +4m3s), while Stéphane Peterhansel was sixth (+4m21s). Holowczyc (Mini), Lavieille (Haval) and Poulter (Toyota) all finished inside the top 10. Despite being a Dakar rookie, the latter even figured in the lead at Passage Control 1!

His South African team-mate Giniel de Villiers, who came second in 2013, dropped more than 15 minutes on the stage, however, and it was a tough baptism of fire for the factory Ford Rangers, with Argentina’s Lucio Alvarez reported stopped at Km104. Robby Gordon (Hummer) started the stage 26 minutes late and fellow American B.J. Baldwin (Chevrolet) has dropped 52 minutes already.

Leg 2 will take competitors to San Rafael via a 433km competitive loop.

Sur les pistes sinueuses et caillouteuses de la région de Cordoba, l’agilité du Haval H8/Michelin (un véhicule basé sur le BMW X3 CC) et la dextérité de Carlos Sousa ont fait sensation. Le Portugais a remporté la 1^ère spéciale du Dakar 2014 longue de 180 km et devancé un groupé de trois Mini ALL4 Racing emmené par l’Argentin Orlando Terranova qui s’est incliné pour seulement 11s.

Nasser Al-Attiyah a rapidement pris en mains sa nouvelle monture en terminant 3^e à 47s du vainqueur, devant l’Espagnol Nani Roma (+1min15s). De son côté, Carlos Sainz a bouclé sa 1^èrespéciale au volant du Buggy SMG à la 5^e place - à déjà plus de 4 minutes du leader - devant « Monsieur Dakar », Stéphane Peterhansel (6^e, +4min21s). KHolowczic (Mini), Lavieille (Haval) et Poulter (Toyota) entrent dans le top-ten du jour. Ce dernier était pointé en tête au CP1 pour son 1^er Dakar.

Son équipier sud-africain Giniel de Villiers, 2^e l’an passé, a perdu plus de 15 minutes sur son Toyota Hilux. Départ laborieux aussi pour les Ford Ranger officiels avec l’Argentin Lucio Alvarez signalé arrêté au km 104, et pour les Américain Robby Gordon (Hummer), qui a pris le départ de la spéciale avec 26 minutes de retard, et BJ Baldwin (Chevrolet) qui accuse 52 minutes de passif.

Demain, la 2^e étape conduira les concurrents à San Rafael après une boucle chronométrée de 433 km.

ERC, Jännerrallye :Kubica steals Austrian victory / Kubica s’impose en Autriche

The first round of the 2014 FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) was won by last season’s WRC-2 champion Robert Kubica (Ford/Michelin) after a thrilling fight with the Czech Republic’s Väclav Pech (2nd, Mini S2000) and Austria’s Raimund Baumschlager (3rd, Skoda Fabia S2000).

The asphalt stages of Upper Austria ranged from damp to icy and even muddy, while fog was an additional hazard during the 2014 Internationale Jännerrallye which produced a superb scrap between some of central Europe’s top drivers.

The 2013 Rally Poland winner Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) emerged as the early leader, ahead of fellow Pole Kubica (Ford Fiesta RRC). Kajetanowicz went off on SS5, however, and first place was inherited by the multiple Austrian champion Baumschlager (Skoda Fabia S2000), chased by Pech and Kubica who were less than15 seconds behind.

An alternator problem prevented Baumschlager from resisting the pressure applied by Kubica and Pech who completed the first day in first and second places, split by 6.4s.

Sunday’s action saw the latter take the lead when Kubica was handed a 10-second penalty for a jump start on SS12. Pech then remained ahead of the Pole until the last stage (SS18) which the two men started separated by 11.8s. The six-time Czech champion chose to fit extra-soft Michelin R01 tyres to his Mini John Cooper Works S2000 for the final test, while Kubica opted for studded Michelin NA00 snow tyres for the front wheels of his Ford and non-studded NA00s at the rear.

This judicious choice enabled the Pole to beat his rival by 31.7s and claim the Internationale Jännerrallye by margins of 19.9s over Pech and 1m36.9s over Baumschlager. It was the ideal start to the year for Kubica and his new co-driver Maciej Szczepaniak who contested the Austrian event as part of their preparations for the Rallye Monte-Carlo.

Austria’s Beppo Harrach (4^th, Mitsubishi Lancer R4) won the Production class, while Jaromir Tarabus (Skoda) rounded off the top five, ahead of Andreas Aigner – who was driving a Peugeot 207 S2000 for the first time – and Russian youngster Gryazin (Ford). First place in the two-wheel drive class went to Michael Bohm (Suzuki).

The next round of the ERC will take place in Latvia (January 31-February 2).Disputé en Haute-Autriche sur des routes asphalte tantôt mouillées et verglacées, parfois boueuses ou noyées dans le brouillard, l’Internationale Jännerrallye a une nouvelle fois été le théâtre d’une superbe confrontation entre les meilleurs pilotes d’Europe Centrale.

Le Polonais Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) s’est très vite installé aux commandes devant son compatriote Robert Kubica (Ford Fiesta RRC). Puis le vainqueur du Rally Poland 2013 est sorti de la route dans l’ES5, laissant le multiple champion autrichien Raimund Baumschlager en tête sur sa Skoda Fabia S2000 devant Pech et Kubica, tous groupés en 15 secondes.

Handicapé par son alternateur, Baumschlager n’a pu contenir les assauts de Robert Kubica et de Väclav Pech qui ont conclu la 1^ère étape dans cet ordre séparés par 6s4. Le lendemain, Pech a pris la tête à l’issue de l’ES12 après une pénalité de 10s infligée à Kubica (départ volé) et parvint à contenir son rival jusqu’à la 18^e et dernière spéciale.

Au départ de cette ultime spéciale (25 km), les deux hommes étaient séparés par 11s8. Au parc d’assistance de Freistadt, le sextuple champion tchèque a choisi de chausser sa Mini John Cooper Works S2000 de pneus Michelin extra soft R01, alors que Kubica a préféré monter des pneus neige Michelin NA00 cloutés à l’avant et non-cloutés à l’arrière sur sa Ford Fiesta RRC.

Le Polonais a signé un chrono époustouflant, laissant son rival à 31s7, pour remporter le 31^eInternational Jännerrallye avec 19s9 d’avance sur Väclav Pech et 1min36s9 sur Baumschlager. Venus en Autriche pour préparer le Rallye Monte-Carlo, Robert Kubica et son nouveau copilote Maciej Szczepaniak démarrent bien sa saison 2014.

L’Autrichien Beppo Harrach (Mitsubishi Lancer R4) termine à la 4^e place et remporte la catégorie Production. Jaromir Tarabus (Skoda) complète le top-five devant Andreas Aigner qui découvrait la Peugeot 207 S2000, et le jeune Russe Gryazin (Ford). La catégorie 2-roues motrices revient à Michael Bohm (Suzuki).

La prochaine manche ERC se déroulera en Lettonie du 31 janvier au 3 février.

Dakar, Etape 1 : Barreda (Honda-Michelin) premier leader

The opening stage of the 2014 Dakar was won by Honda-Michelin’s Joan Barreda. The Spanish youngster completed the 180km test in a time of 2h25m31s to beat Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) and Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin).

After three days of pre-event formalities, the 2014 Dakar’s bikers were up early this morning for the start of the competition proper in front of a huge crowd alongside Rosario’s ‘Monumento a la Bandera’.

Last year’s winner Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin) was the first rider off the ramp, followed by Marc Coma and Joan Barreda, en route to tonight’s halt in San Luis after a ride of 809km through Argentina, including the event’s first stage (180km).

Barreda was the early leader at the test’s first checkpoint (Km28.7s) with a cushion of five and 14 seconds over Coma and Despres respectively. The Honda-Michelin rider maintained his domination to collect the sixth Dakar stage win of his career, chased across the line by Coma (+37s) and Despres (+1m40s).

Frenchman Alain Duclos (Sherco SR 450 Rally-Michelin) produced a strong performance to post the fourth-best time (+1m56s), making it four different bike manufacturers at the top of the provisional leaderboard.

Last season’s FIM Cross-Country Rally World Champion Paolo Goncalves (Honda-Michelin) was fifth (+2m25s), ahead of Chile’s Chaleco Lopez (KTM-Michelin, +3min24). Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin), Michael Metge (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin), San Suderland and Alessandro Botturi (Husqvarna-Michelin) rounded off today’s top 10. Potential winner Helder Rodrigues, 22^nd, dropped 8m58s to his Honda team-mate Barreda.

Monday’s action (SS2, 359km) will include the infamous grey sand dunes near Nihuil in the course of the 724-kilometre second leg that will take competitors to San Rafael.

Après trois jours de vérifications techniques et de formalités administratives, les concurrents o
nt franchi très tôt ce matin le podium de départ situé aux abords du ‘Monumento a la Bandera', à Rosario devant une foule immense.

Vainqueur en titre, Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing – Michelin) a été le premier pilote à s’élancer devant Marc Coma et Joan Barreda. La première étape longue de 809 kilomètres menait les concurrents de Rosario à San Luis.

Joan Barreda était pointé en tête lors du premier temps intermédiaire (km 28,7) avec une avance respective de 5 et 14 secondes sur Coma et Despres. Rapide, le pilote Honda-Michelin remporte la sixième spéciale de sa carrière sur le Dakar. ll devance Marc Coma de 37 secondes. Cyril Despres, troisième, concède 1min40 sur le premier leader.

Auteur d’une belle prestation, le français Alain Duclos au guidon de sa Sherco SR 455 Rally-Michelin se classe quatrième à 1min56 du vainqueur. Quatre constructeurs différents figurent aux quatre premières places de cette première étape.

Champion du monde FIM Rally-Raid en titre, Paolo Goncalves (Honda-Michelin) a terminé à la cinquième place (+2min25) devant le chilien Chaleco Lopez (KTM-Michelin, +3min24). Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin), Michael Metge (Yamaha Factory Racing – Michelin), San Suderland et Alessandro Botturi (Husqvarna – Michelin) complètent le Top 10. Candidat à la victoire, Helder Rodrigues (Honda, 22ème) a été relégué à 8min58 de son coéquipier Barreda.

Demain, les motards affronteront les premières dunes grises de la région de Nihuil lors de la seconde étape longue de 724 km dont 359 km de secteur chronométré qui les conduira à San Rafael.
