    VEHICLE BREAKDOWN: KONG

I am pretty confident in saying that at some point in every adult drivers life you have drag raced someone to some degree. Its like this, you are in a hurry, you hit a red light, you know you need to get over to the other lane and someone pulls up, you find yourself staring at the stop lights at the intersection, glancing at the lights directing the other crossing lanes and you see it turn yellow, you toss the car into first gear and begin to slowly release the clutch and bam – GREEN LIGHT – and away you go! You my friend have drag raced.
Drag racing is a part of motorsports and it has slowly transitioned into the UTV segment with more and more companies and enthusiasts building their UTVs into sand drag machines. We are entirgued by the vehicles those involved are building and it was a perfect time to get up close and feature one of our favorite drag machines built by long time UTVUnderground.com forum member Bart “GOVACHO” Chielens. Bart with help from Queen Racing and a host of other sponsors has built one of the coolest looking and fastest drag RZRs on the planet! We caught up with him earlier this year at SXS Wars in Dumont to BREAKDOWN this amazing machine he named “KONG”!
The story behind “KONG” is a cool one! CHECK IT OUT!

This Range Rover was converted into a desert stormer

Of the many Range Rover conversions available in the 1970s and 80s, the convertible proved particularly popular, especially in warmer climes such as the Middle East. Looking at this fabulous Rioja Red example, it’s easy to see why…
This striking Range Rover Convertible was modified by Special Vehicle Conversions Ltd, and fell into its former owner’s possession by virtue of a card game in the early 1990s. However, he had no space for such a car and stored it in a lock-up, where it would remain until 2014. In fact, it had been tucked up for so long that the owner actually forgot where he'd put it.
Fortunately, the car was discovered and treated to an eight-month restoration to take it back to its former glory. As Silverstone Auctions’ catalogue description of the car so appropriately concludes, “This special Range Rover convertible would be equally at home on a grouse moor on an August afternoon, or burbling down Chelsea’s King’s Road with a different quarry in mind.” Showing just 62,500 miles, the right-hand-drive Range Rover will be offered at the Silverstone Auctions NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on 14 November 2015, estimated at £35,000-40,000.

    Yard Built - XSR700 'Super 7' by JvB-moto

Germany’s JvB-moto is the first custom builder to work on the XSR700. The ‘Super 7’ makes a bold statement, making it clear that the possibilities for customization and personalisation with the XSR700 are huge.
Without any cutting or welding to the frame, Jens worked to strip back the bike with the drive to expose the essence of the retro styled machine.

Ex-Fangio Ferrari 290 MM to headline the RM Sotheby’s New York sale

On 10 December 2015, RM Sotheby’s will offer one of the most original and significant 1950s Ferrari sports-racing cars at its ‘Driven by Disruption’ sale – an ex-Works 290 MM built for Juan Manuel Fangio for the 1956 Mille Miglia…
It appears that the RM Sotheby’s Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato announcement last week was merely an appetiser before the main meal, as the auction house has consigned to its ‘Driven By Disruption’ sale the ex-Works Ferrari 290 MM in which Il Maestro, Juan Manuel Fangio, raced solo to fourth position in the 1956 Mille Miglia (an unusually soaked race which was, incidentally, won by Eugenio Castelotti in the sister car).
One of four 290 MMs built, ‘0626’ was also driven by Phil Hill (another future World Champion) and many other celebrated Ferrari Formula 1 drivers, further adding to its appeal. The car was in the custody of Pierre Bardinon, a renowned Ferrari collector, for almost 34 years, before it was sold to its current owner and it is rare in that it has never been crashed, thus making it one of the most original – and desirable – 1950s Ferrari sports-racers in the world. Boasting matching numbers, the all-important Classiche certification and eligibility to all major historic events, what better car in which to take to the ramp at the Mille Miglia in Brescia next year, 60 years after Il Maestro did the same? It will go under the hammer at the RM Sotheby’s ‘Driven by Disruption’ sale, taking place in New York on 10 December 2015. Perhaps inevitably, the estimate is available only on request, though expect the car to fetch in excess of 28m US dollars.

You can find the full catalogue for the ‘Driven by Disruption’ sale, taking place on 10 December 2015, listed in the Classic Driver Market.

The 2015 FIA European Rally Championship draws to a close this week to the majestic backdrop of the Swiss Alps. The recently-crowned champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz from Poland will not attend, so the chief challengers for victory promise to be Peugeot drivers Craig Breen and Bryan Bouffier.

The Tour de Corse’s promotion back to WRC status has seen the Rallye International du Valais recover its slot in the European Championship. Although this year’s title battles have all been settled, the splendid Sion- and Martigny-based event has attracted an entry of 90 crews.
After sewing up the Drivers’ title in Greece, Kajetanowicz has chosen to skip the Swiss round, but the organisers can still boast a big, quality field.
Irishman Craig Breen (Peugeot/Michelin) will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing run on the RallyRACC-Catalunya to conclude his ERC programme with a win and secure the championship’s runner-up honours. However, the Peugeot Rally Academy representative will face competition from Frenchman Bryan Bouffier (Peugeot 208 T16/Michelin) who is a real candidate for the win.
Other likely front-runners are Alexey Lukyanuk (Ford Fiesta R5) and Bruno Magalhaes (Peugeot 208 T16/Michelin), along with Swiss stars Olivier Burri (Citroën DS3 RRC), Jonathan Hirschi (Peugeot 208 T16), Federico Della Casa (DS3 R5) and Florian Gonon (Peugeot 207 S2000).
Another driver to follow will be this year’s Junior ERC champion Emil Bergqvist who is getting his first ride in a R5, namely a Michelin-equipped Peugeot 208 T16. Meanwhile, François Delecour will be celebrating his recently-claimed Coupe R-GT crown in his Porsche 997 GT3. The sound of its Flat 6 engine is sure to delight the spectators!
The asphalt stages, some of which include portions of dirt, promise to be as impressive as ever but crews could face wintry weather high in the mountains. In addition to the availability of the French firm’s R01, R11 and R21 catalogue tyres, Michelin’s partners will be able to fit snow tyres if necessary. For the moment, though, forecasters are only predicting some rain.
Action will begin with Thursday’s shakedown followed by three relatively short stages. Friday’s menu features two visits to a loop of three stages, plus a super-special (Casernes de Sion). Saturday’s ‘Cols’ (33.07km) will be the longest test of the rally which will conclude with ‘Col des Planches’ (25.15km) before Saturday evening’s finish in Martigny.

Preview Thaïlande : Le crépuscule apparait et López se dirige vers un deuxième titre / Twilight highlight as López closes on WTCC title number two

Race preview: Twilight highlight as López closes on WTCC title number two

José María López will celebrate back-to-back FIA World Touring Car Championship titles* in twilight when Thailand stages the all-action WTCC for the first time from 31 October-1 November.
*Citroën’s Argentine ace closes in on second world crown*Honda hope Norbert Michelisz can clinch Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy*LADA trio keen to impress as Thailand hosts inaugural FIA world championship race*Local hero Tin Sritrai to make WTCC history as first Thai driver
The second of two 11-lap races at the state-of-the-art Chang International Circuit in Buriram will take place at dusk under floodlights from 17h30 local time on 1 November with Citroën driver López on the cusp of joining an elite group of drivers to have successfully defended their WTCC crown.
However, if the 32-year-old Argentine is to follow Andy Priaulx (WTCC champion from 2005-2007) and Yvan Muller (2010-2011) and leave Thailand as champion for a second time then he must add to his season tally of 396 points, which has handed him a 75-point margin over team-mate Muller with four races left.
While there are myriad points permutations to consider, if López wins race one from pole then he’s champion regardless of Muller’s result. And should Muller triumph in the Thai opener having started from top spot with López finishing second from P2 or P3 on the grid, then López needs to finish race two third or higher to be champion, even if Muller wins the second race. But with eight wins, five poles and nine fastest laps, López is the driver in the ascendancy and has triumphed at all of the new-for-2015 venues used so far this season.
And López isn’t the only driver eying WTCC title gold in Thailand, which has never hosted an FIA world championship event before.Norbert Michelisz holds a 25-point advantage in the race for the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy and the Zengő Motorsport Honda pilot could secure the accolade if results go his way in Buriram. However, the championship within a championship for independent racers isn’t the limit of the Hungarian’s ambitions with fourth overall in the final standings and the prize of finishing ahead of fellow Honda drivers Tiago Monteiro and Gabriele Tarquini more than realistic targets.
In the battle for the outright runner-up spot, Muller is 39 points clear of fellow Citroën driver Sébastien Loeb, who has excelled during his second season in the WTCC since switching from the World Rally Championship. The legendary Frenchman, who recently announced his participation on January’s Dakar cross-country rally in South America, has claimed three wins in 2015 – just two less than four-time WTCC champion Muller.
Ma Qing Hua, who completes the Citroën Total WTCC line-up, is also a winner this year and is fourth in the points, while Hugo Valente(Campos Racing), Rob Huff (LADA Sport Rosneft) and Tom Chilton (ROAL Motorsport) complete the current top 10 having all claimed podium finishes. Mehdi Bennani (Sébastien Loeb Racing) is P11 in the standings heading to Thailand with Dutch duo Tom Coroneland Nicky Catsburg next up. Stefano D’Aste (ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport), LADA’s Le Mans 24 Hours class-winning Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre and privateer Grégoire Demoustier (Craft-Bamboo Racing) will also be in action in Buririam with Thai WTCC rookie Tin Sritrai partnering Valente and John Filippi at Campos Racing.

    TWISTMOTO HONDA NX650 CHARLIE1

So it’s early Sunday morning, the fog is lifting and caffeine begins its journey through your circulatory system delivering dexterity to stiff digits, and if you’re lucky the corners of your mouth will upturn slightly in anticipation of a whole day in the shed. There’s something about embarking on a first build, and popping your cherry with a best mate is all the more rewarding.
Andy and Steve from Kent bought this 1988 Honda Dominator from a chap in Scotland and figured for £600 it wasn’t worth the trek up for a viewing. After many touring miles across Europe the Dommie had gathered a fair few war wounds and daubs of Hammerite so nothing short of a complete strip down was called for.

Charlie cAndy’s business, Twistmoto, deals in camping and travel gear so this bike was to be used as the test mule and therefore practicality would reign over urban new wave cool, although proper sketches were made to ensure the zip-off trouser aesthetic was avoided.
Their formula would be: 1 Japanese jalopy + (enthusiastic men)² ÷ 0.0047 experience x 1 garden shed √ tiny budget + 1 cold British winter.
CHarlie DAt some point the poor old girl had received a bit of a bang, bending the frame slightly – Maidstone Motorliner strapped her to their special bench for a light seeing to. Now straight and naked two piles could be made, one for degreasing, blasting and refreshing and the other for recycling, three decades of use takes its toll of components mass produced cheaply at the behest of an enthusiastic HMC bean counter. A tidy with the angle grinder and removal of extraneous tabs gave the powder coaters a canvas upon which they applied their satin black magic.
Charlie EUp front the gangly forks were serviced and shortened with 2” spacers, which adds a few degrees of aggression to the stance whilst retaining practicality. Hitting the bump stops on what’s left would suggest over exuberance and potential for an unscheduled laying out of Andy’s camping equipment.
    Charlie F
A ply-wood base was glass-fibred and sent to local upholsterers Caulfield Leather for a personalised tuck-n-roll brat-ish seat, with just enough cushioning to keep the ‘roids at bay on longer trips.
    Charlie G
The wiring loom provided particular challenges and a steepening of the guy’s learning curve. Multiple splices and chops hid beneath rolls of electrical tape and random fuses appeared from nowhere, presumed from redundant touring and commuting accessories fitted by previous owners looking to introduce decadence to a rather basic steed. A Koso all-in-one gauge keeps things simple mirrored by a normal key ignition, mounted in the usual position.
    Charlie H
With the freshly coated cases back in situ attention could be turned to the heart of the project, Honda’s bullet-proof Radial Valve, twin-port thumper. These lumps keep on spinning through years of neglect, will run on yak’s piss and apparently even the 3 octane sweetcorn based stuff they serve-up across the pond. Breaking down is boring though, so the guys checked tolerances and gave the old single a thorough service. To encourage the old nags inside to recount their wild stallion youth a full stainless exhaust by GPR was fitted, along with a Dynojetted and rebuilt carb – 180 main jet, needle raised to .75 sucking though a 62mm K&N cone filter.
CHarlie ISalt-abused rims were sidelined and replaced with Morad 17 inchers (300 front & 350 rear), mounted to stock hubs with black anodised spokes and stainless nipples. Continental’s dual sport stalwart TKC80s grip the ground and Goodridge hoses and a motocross front master cylinder make the most of rebuilt callipers.
    CHarlie J
The icing on the cake was the delivery of a 1987 Honda NSR 50 fuel tank, painted to perfection by Racepaint UK to Andy’s sketches. Just reward for 171 hours over 32 days spent in the shed. Steve & Andy are thrilled with Charlie 1 and have covered many a grubby mile sampling the fruits of their labour. For £2800 all-in they’ve done a cracking job and we’re sure they’ll be locked away again this winter.
