Moto GP /Marquez the main man on day one at Valencia : Márquez contrôle les essais libres du vendredi à Valence

Despite the windy conditions in FP2 at the Valencia track Marquez stepped up the pace in the second half of the session, with his best time of 1’31.220 not far off Pedrosa’s pole record of 1’30.844 from last year.

Pedrosa was close to his Repsol Honda colleague in terms of free practice pace, with Lorenzo improving late in the session having spent time in his box working on set-up with his team.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow ended up fourth overall despite a late crash, from which he escaped unhurt. The Englishman rides in his last GP for the team this weekend before departing for Ducati.

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi is working with Crew Chief Jeremy Burgess for the last time this weekend too and he was fifth fastest on Friday, 0.4s off the pace.

The top ten was rounded out by Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Ducati Team pair Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden.

Aleix Espargaro was furious but unhurt after he crashed his ART machine, ending 13th on the timesheet.

Malgré des conditions météo moins favorables l’après-midi que la matin, Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) a réussi à battre le temps de référence qu’il avait établi en FP1 pour finir la première journée du Grand Prix Generali de Valence avec un chrono d’1’31.220 et un léger avantage (0.066s) sur son coéquipier Dani Pedrosa. 

Le Champion du Monde en titre Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) a quant à lui fini troisième, derrière ses deux compatriotes, avec 0.158s de retard sur Márquez, qu’il suit de treize points avant la dernière manche de la saison 2013.

Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech3) a affiché un excellent niveau en se classant à seulement 0.282s de Márquez et devant Valentino Rossi (Yamaha Factory Racing), cinquième à 0.419s du leader. Quatrième le matin, Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) rétrogradait à la huitième place, derrière Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) et Álvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini).

Les pilotes du team Ducati, Andrea Dovizioso et Nicky Hayden, complétaient le Top 10 devant Andrea Iannone (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing), Michele Pirro, en Wild Card avec le Ducati Test Team, et Aleix Espargaró (Power Electronics Aspar), qui demeure le premier pilote CRT malgré sa chute. Randy de Puniet (Power Electronics Aspar) a pour sa part enregistré le dix-neuvième temps.

ERC, Leg 2: A Finn in peak form in Switzerland’s Alps / Un Finlandais leader en Suisse

The final round of the 2013 FIA European Rally Championship is provisionally led by Esapekka Lappi. The Skoda Motorsport driver has built up a margin of 43.7s and 1m18.6s over Andreas Aigner and Olivier Burri.

After inheriting the Rallye du Valais lead when Peugeot’s Craig Breen and Jérémi Ancian took time penalties for early arrival at Thursday evening’s SS3, Andreas Aigner (Subaru Impreza R4) was unable to resist the charge of Esapekka Lappi and his Skoda Fabia S2000/Michelin today.

Friday’s first competitive loop saw the reigning Production World Champion match the Finn’s times on the morning’s damp and slippery stages, but the conditions dried before this afternoon’s visit and the Skoda youngster was able to pull gradually clear. Lappi’s overnight lead stands at 43.7s. “It was better on the later stages on my medium-compound Michelin R20 tyres,” he observed. “I believe I have improved on asphalt since the Sanremo.”

Meanwhile, Aigner is 35s ahead of Olivier Burri and is determined to defend second place: “I stayed on soft tyres this afternoon, but it maybe wasn’t the ideal choice. It’s nice to be fighting for a good position overall rather for a class win, though.”

Meanwhile, Burri (Ford Fiesta RRC) was quite upset at the end of Leg 2: “There’s talk of rain tomorrow. If they don’t allow us to fit rain tyres with all the portions of gravel that await us, I won’t take the start.”

Indeed, the last day of the Rallye du Valais features 35km of dirt in total. Switzerland’s Nicolas Althaus (5^th, Peugeot 207 S2000) suggested he might even compete on snow tyres on Saturday if the weather is bad. His compatriot Grégoire Hotz retired on the road section from SS8 to SS9.

Russian youngster Vasiliy Gryazin (Ford Fiesta S2000) is fourth, even though this is only his third asphalt rally. Jérémi Ancian and Craig Breen have fought back to sixth and eighth respectively: “It’s been a good day,” commented the former. “I stiffened the set-up of my 207 S2000 and it felt much better after that.”

C’est le Champion d’Europe Production Andreas Aigner (Subaru Impreza R4) qui avait hérité du leadership après les lourdes pénalités infligées aux pilotes Peugeot Craig Breen et Jérémi Ancian hier soir (pointage en avance au départ de l’ES3).

Mais l’Autrichien n’a pas pu résister bien longtemps au retour de la Skoda Fabia S2000/Michelin. Dans la boucle matinale, Andreas a néanmoins fait jeu égal avec le Finlandais sur des routes mouillées et très glissantes. Mais cet après-midi, il ne subsistait que quelques plaques d’humidité et le pilote Skoda s’est peu à peu détaché. Esapekka Lappi compte désormais 43s7 d’avance sur Aigner : « C’était mieux en fin de journée avec les pneus Michelin R20 medium. J’ai beaucoup progressé sur asphalte depuis le Sanremo », déclarait Lappi.

Andreas Aigner dispose de 35 secondes d’avance sur Olivier Burri et compte bien défendre chèrement sa 2^e place : « J’ai gardé les pneus soft cet après-midi, ce n’était peut-être pas idéal. C’est bon de se battre pour une place au classement général plutôt que dans une catégorie. »

Olivier Burri (Ford Fiesta RRC), huit ou neuf fois vainqueur sur ce rallye, était fâché à l’arrivée de la 2^e étape : « Demain, on annonce de la pluie et si les commissaires n’autorisent pas les pneus pluie avec toutes les portions en terre qui nous attendant, je ne prends pas le départ. »

En effet, la dernière journée du Rallye du Valais comprend de longues portions sur terre, 35 km au total. Le Suisse Nicolas Althaus (5^e, Peugeot 207 S2000) parlait carrément de rouler en pneus neige demain si la météo était mauvaise… Son compatriote Grégoire Hotz a dû abandonner sur la liaison entre l’ES8 et l’ES9.

Le jeune Russe Vasiliy Gryazin est 4^e au volant de sa Ford Fiesta S2000 pour son 3^e rallye asphalte seulement. Jérémi Ancian et Craig Breen sont remontés à la 6^e et 8^e place du classement général : « C’était une bonne journée, on a un peu durci les réglages de la 207 S2000 et c’était beaucoup mieux », résumait Ancian à l’arrivée.
