WRC, Espagne, étape 1 : Ogier fait un pas vers le titre / Ogier steps closer to the title

Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) a bouclé la première journée en tête et creusé un écart de plus de 30 secondes sur ses concurrents immédiats, dont son challenger pour le titre mondial 2014 Jari-Matti Latvala (2e, +36s6). Latvala, Ostberg, Mikkelsen et Hirvonen sont groupés en moins de 5 secondes.

Après une première boucle très poussiéreuse ce matin, la visibilité était meilleure cet après-midi et le rythme a augmenté d’un cran pour le second tour disputé sous une chaleur estivale. Dans la courte ES5 (7 km), quatre pilotes ont terminé dans la même seconde – Ogier, Mikkelsen, Ostberg, Paddon. Le ton était donné…

La spéciale suivante a été remportée par Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) qui a alors réduit l’écart avec le leader Sébastien Ogier à 4s6. Auteur d’un meilleur temps ce matin, Hayden Paddon a terminé 4e de cette spéciale, Pesells. Hyundai Motorsport, qui reçoit ce week-end le numéro 2 du groupe sud-coréen, avait jusque-là vécu une journée plutôt positive, mais dans la dernière spéciale, Thierry Neuville a effectué une touchette et dû changer sa roue.

Le grand gagnant du jour, c’est incontestablement Sébastien Ogier, qui a peut-être fait une grande partie du chemin le menant au second titre mondial. Contraint de balayer les pistes, Seb ne s’attendait sans doute pas à mener le rallye ce soir. Mais il a bénéficié d’un peu de chance (tête-à-queue après l’arrivée ES7), et surtout des faveurs d’Eole : l’absence de vent ce matin a noyé les spéciales de poussière et a lourdement pénalisé son challenger Jari-Matti Latvala (7^eaprès ES3). Le Finlandais est 2^e à 36s6 de son équipier, qu’il doit absolument devancer dimanche pour prolonger le suspense au Wales Rally GB.

Hormis un tête-à-queue dans l’ES3 et peu de visibilité ce matin, Mads Ostberg (3^e, Citroën) a réalisé une belle prestation. Il est ce soir sur le podium provisoire à seulement 6/10^e de seconde de Latvala, et avec un minuscule dixième d’avance sur son compatriote Andreas Mikkelsen (4^e, VW). Mikko Hirvonen (5^e, Ford), est aussi dans le bon groupe.

Robert Kubica (Ford) a peut-être réalisé sa plus belle prestation sur la terre de la saison. Malgré un tête-à-queue dans l’ES7, le Polonais pointe à la 6^e place, à 15s6 du groupe en bagarre pour la 2^e place. Et l’asphalte pourrait lui être profitable demain.

Dani Sordo (7^e, Hyundai) est un peu décroché, mais il peut lui aussi revenir très fort sur l’asphalte des étapes 2 et 3 pour une place sur le podium. Kris Meeke (Citroën) était bien parti avec un meilleur temps dans l’ES2, et puis il est parti à la faute dans l’ES3 et a dû se retirer. Abandon aussi d’un autre Britannique, Elfyn Evans (Ford) après avoir endommagé son radiateur dans une touchette.

En WRC-2, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford/Michelin) est toujours en tête. En Fiesta Trophy, le leader Quentin Gilbert est sorti de la route, laissant la première place à Tom Cave, en lice pour le titre. Son rival Sander Pärn est 4^e à plus de 2 minutes.

Demain, le RallyRACC-Rally de Espana se poursuit sur asphalte avec, pour fêter la 50^e édition, une spéciale de 50 km !

Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) wrapped up the first leg in Spain with an advantage of more than 30 seconds over his biggest threats whose ranks are led by fellow title chaser Jari-Matti Latvala (2nd, +36s6). The Finn, Ostberg, Mikkelsen and Hirvonen are covered by less than five seconds.

After the issue of hanging dust this morning, visibility improved for the second attempts at the same stages which were a little faster in the summerlike heat.

The tone for the afternoon was set by Ogier, Andreas Mikkelsen, Mads Ostberg and Hayden Paddon who completed SS5 (7km) on the same second!

The next test (‘Pesells’) was claimed by Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) who closed the gap to Ogier to just 4.6s, while Paddon followed up his best time this morning with a top-four finish.

Most of the day had effectively been quite positive for Hyundai Motorsport which is hosting the Korean firm’s number two this weekend, but Neuville was forced to stop to change a wheel on today’s last stage.

The leg’s star was undoubtedly Ogier who has taken a big step towards securing a second Drivers’ crown. As today’s ‘road-sweeper’, the Frenchman didn’t expect to be leading this evening. However, he benefited from a little luck (harmless spin on SS7) and was above all helped by the lack of wind which meant hanging dust was an issue this morning, notably for fellow VW driver Jari-Matti Latvala who was a lowly seventh overall after SS3.

The Finn has since fought back to second (+36.6s) but he must absolutely finish ahead of his team-mate if he wants to keep the title battle alive until Wales RallyGB.

With the exception of a spin (SS3) and the hanging dust, Ostberg (3^rd, Citroën) enjoyed a solid run and has a footing on the overnight podium, just six-tenths short of Latvala. That said, he is only one-tenth clear of Mikkelsen (4^th, VW), and Hirvonen (5^th, Ford) isn’t far behind, either.

Robert Kubica (Ford) produced one of his best performances of the season on gravel today and survived a spin on SS7 to figure in sixth place, 15.6s behind the scrap for second place. Tomorrow’s asphalt could boost his chances.

Dani Sordo (7^th, Hyundai) has lost a little ground but is another driver who could see his podium hopes increase when the rally switches to sealed-surface stages for Saturday and Sunday.

Kris Meeke (Citroën) was looking good after setting the best time on SS2 but was then side-lined by a mistake on SS3. Fellow Briton Elfyn Evans (Ford) has also retired (radiator damage).

Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford/Michelin) is still setting the pace in WRC-2, but the Fiesta Trophy leader Quentin Gilbert has crashed, handing the class’s lead to Tom Cave who is in contention for the title. His big rival Sander Pärn is fourth, more than two minutes adrift.

On Saturday, the RallyRACC-Rally de Espana will celebrate its 50^th edition with a marathon stage of 50km in length!
