Au volant de sa Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin, Sébastien Ogier a remporté une victoire « facile » au Pays de Galles pour conclure la saison 2014 en beauté. La superbe bagarre pour la deuxième place a été remportée par Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) qui met un terme à sa carrière sur un 69e podium mondial. Nasser Al-Attiyah est Champion WRC-2 avec Ford et Michelin.
Après avoir débuté l’année par un succès au Rallye Monte-Carlo, Sébastien Ogier a décroché sa 8e victoire 2014 aujourd’hui à Llandudno, au nord du Pays de Galles.
Le double champion du monde a été aidé en cela par ses deux équipiers, Andreas Mikkelsen et Jari-Matti Latvala, auteurs de sorties de route. Le Finlandais pointait à seulement 6s6 d’Ogier avant de perdre plus de 3 minutes samedi matin. Dès lors, Seb n’avait plus qu’à contrôler pour récolter sa 16e victoire avec Volkswagen (sa 24e au total). La VW Polo R WRC, qui a débuté il y a 24 mois, a déjà remporté 24 victoires mondiales.
« La victoire était l’objectif de cette dernière manche », a admis Ogier, vainqueur du Wales Rally GB pour la seconde année consécutive. « C’était la grosse attaque jusqu’à la faute de Jari-Matti. Ensuite, j’ai juste géré mon avance, mais ce n’est jamais facile dans ces conditions. »
Avec Mikkelsen et Latvala hors du match pour la victoire, toute l’attention s’est portée sur la bagarre terrible pour la 2e place. Elle est finalement revenue à Mikko Hirvonen (+37s6) qui disputait son dernier rallye mondial comme pilote professionnel. Le Finlandais a signé le 69epodium de ses 13 ans de carrière au top-niveau de la discipline. « C’était une des plus belles batailles que j’ai livrées. Sympa pour terminer sa carrière », déclarait Hirvonen à l’arrivée.
Son duel avec Kris Meeke (6e, Citroën) ce matin s’est terminé quand le Britannique est passé au fossé dans l’ES18, endommageant deux roues. Il a dû disputer la fin de rallye au ralenti. Les malheurs de Meeke ont profité à son équipier Mads Ostberg qui termine sur le podium (+1min03s6). Le Norvégien a effectué une course solide, soulignée par deux meilleurs temps. Ce résultat permet au team Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi WRT d’être vice-champion du monde Constructeurs 2014 avec deux points d’avance sur M-Sport WRT !
Le vainqueur de l’ADAC Rallye Deutschland Thierry Neuville (+1min14s9) a conclu à la 4e place sur sa Hyundai i20 WRC et conservé l’avantage sur le Gallois Elfyn Evans (5e, Ford) jusqu’au bout.
Jari Ketomaa (Ford Fiesta R5) n’a pas été inquiété en WRC-2. Il s’est imposé devant l’Italien Lorenzo Bertelli. Matthew Wilson a fêté son retour en WRC par une 3e place au volant de sa Ford Fiesta aux couleurs de Michelin Pilot Sport. La 6e place de Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford Fiesta RRC/Michelin) permet au Qatari de coiffer la couronne mondiale WRC-2, 8 ans après son titre en Production.

Sébastien Ogier steered his Michelin-equipped Volkswagen to an easy victory in Wales to conclude his second title-winning campaign on a high note. A thrilling battle for second saw Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) wrap up his career in the medals. Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford) is the 2014 WRC-2 champion.
After beginning the 2014 season with victory in Monte-Carlo, Sébastien Ogier took his total score for the year to eight wins when the WRC season ended today in Llandudno, North Wales.
The two-time champion was aided when his chief rivals – team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala – left the road early on. The Finn had been challenging just 6.6s behind when he fell back on Day 2’s opening test but, from that point, Ogier was free to cruise to his 16th WRC win with Volkswagen. The latter has now won 22 world class events in the Polo R WRC which made its competitive debut less than 24 months ago!
“Winning was my target for the last round,” admitted Ogier after winning Rally GB for the second time. “It was flat out when I was fighting with Jari-Matti. After that, I just had to control, but that’s never easy in conditions like this.”
With Mikkelsen and Latvala out of contention, attention focused on what turned out to be a thrilling scrap for runner-up honours. Fittingly, they ended up in the hands of Mikko Hirvonen (+37.6s) who was contesting his last rally as a professional rally driver. It was the 69th podium of his 13-year career.
The Finn’s intense last-morning fight with Kris Meeke (Citroën) ended when the Briton dropped a chunk of time on the penultimate test, the result of tyre damage sustained during a visit to a ditch on SS18.
“It was one of the most enjoyable battles I have had. A great way to end my career,” beamed Hirvonen after the last stage.
Meeke’s misfortune played into the hands of Citroën team-mate Mads Ostberg who was delighted to get a footing on the year’s final podium (+1m3.6s). His solid run, which included two fastest times on Sunday, was spoiled by a time penalty and a puncture on Saturday afternoon.
Rallye Deutschland victor Thierry Neuville (+1m14.9s) salvaged fourth place for Hyundai after Meeke fell back to sixth (+2m3.0s), while Elfyn Evans’ continuing apprenticeship with M-Sport Ford bagged fifth on home soil (+1m24.3s).
The result enabled Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT to clinch second place in the Manufacturers’ championship, just two points clear of M-Sport WRT.
After going off on SS2, Mikkelsen re-joined on Saturday when he collected a run of fastest times, but he crashed out for good on the last day’s second stage. With nothing really to fight for, Latvala (8th overall behind Tanak, +2m47.5s) produced a sequence of stage victories on Sunday, including the damp Power Stage.
Jari Ketomaa’s unchallenged domination of the WRC-2 fight lasted to the finish to beat fellow Ford Fiesta R5 driver Lorenzo Bertelli. Matthew Wilson celebrated his return to the world championship with the class’s bronze medal in his Michelin-liveried Fiesta RRC. A safe performance by 43-year old Nasser Al-Attiyah (6th, Fiesta RRC) was sufficient to make sure of the 2014 WRC-2 title, eight years after his Production-WRC crown.
The Junior-WRC battle was won by Northern Irishman Alastair Fisher (Citroën DS3 R3T).
