    BSMC GEAR GUIDE #2

    BSMC GEAR GUIDE ALT 2
The BSMC Friday Gear Guide Continues in week two with something for the ladies included, which we were asked about in our first outing. We will always make an effort to find good kit for girl bikers, as there’s not much out there, plus we’ll try to show you new stuff that isn’t already out there, but some products are becoming well known staples which we just can’t ignore…

PRODUCT REVIEW  – AERO BARNSTORMER WITH SHAWL COLLAR
Riding in the winter months can be brutal, and the cold can batter the soul. Winter 2012/13 was so bitter, I saved some coin and ordered an Aero Barnstormer in the spring. It arrived in good time for the autumn drop in temperature. I’ve worn this jacket all winter on the bikes and can safely say it is the warmest jacket I’ve ever owned.
These jackets are made to order, so you’ll get it true to size, so the fit is perfect. Shearling lined across the chest and double breasted, it keeps my core temperature warm in the nastiest of conditions. The length works for riding, cut high enough not to gather, but low enough to keep the tackle and backside covered. The build quality is exemplary, and the hide thick and durable. It will take several seasons to break it in fully, but this is certainly a jacket for life. The more I wear it, the better it looks and feels.
    SCB cuff
Based on a traditional US design known as the Mackinaw, Aero launched this model in 1990 as the Barnstormer, and it has become the generic name for the style. It’s history lies in the early days of flight, where the the cargo and mail pilots only had their flying coats to keep the elements at bay. The first choice was double-breasted horsehide for it’s warmth, strength and durability.
Aero Leather Clothing Ltd have been making the highest quality leather jackets since 1983. A family business based in Galashiels, Scotland, they are uncompromising in terms of quality and design. Each jacket is individually made by one leatherworker, and is a classic in its own right.
    Collar
The Aero Shawl Collar Barnstormer has four deep pockets, a shearling roll-over wool collar and lining, with corduroy in the lower area. The sleeves are lined with cotton drill with knitted wool storm cuffs. The belt can be drawn tight and the cuffs buttoned, with the collar looped to fully insulate. The Barnstormer is also available without the shearling collar.
The Barnstormer is not an armored jacket, but it’s so tough the level of protection is high. This is a jacket fit for almost any purpose.

PRODUCT REVIEW – PREMIER TROPHY HELMET
Premier have released a replica of their iconic full faced racing lid worn by Phil Read in the 1970s. Both the helmet and visor are fully ECE R22-05 homologated and are made from modern materials to rigorous standards whilst managing to retain the compact shell size of the 1970s original.
There are no vents, which adds to the streamlined shape, the visor is hinged by two screws and friction plates, and held closed by two press studs in keeping with the original.  This is a basic helmet without modern technical features, but looks and feels like an old school full-faced lid.
    PREMIER-trophy-x2
The one size shell is DCA (Dyneema/Carbon/Aramidic fibre) and the polycarbonate anti-scratch visor is 2mm thick. It has a sanitized fabric inner liner with removable and washable cheek pads. The helmet is light, weighing in at 1290gr.
The medium fits my wide head comfortably and the opening is generous. Although the visor may be preferred by some, I ditched it in favour of tinted goggles, and it works well. It’s not as quiet as a modern full faced helmet, but the simple, streamlined looks make up for the luxuries it may lack.
    Premier Comp
This is a good option for those wanting a retro look but more protection than an open face helmet.
The Premier is available with visor in the Anniversary Replica in a choice of white with chequered band, black with chequered band, and a UK flag graphic. It also comes in flat gloss black, matt black, and gloss white.
They offer a version with a peak without visor in Camo Star and matt black.

    PRODUCT REVIEW – MAPLE JEANS
We all know the benefits of wearing protective gear when riding a bike, but often being clad head-to-toe in leather is neither practical or desirable. So often we find ourselves in jeans with only a thin layer of denim between the tarmac and our skin.
Dave Fairbairn founded Maple Jeans to manufacture protective motorcycle jeans that use premium selvedge denim, that look like regular jeans but offer a high level of protection. He teamed up with Satish Tailor to design Kevlar lined jeans that denim aficionados would be happy wearing on and off their machines.
    Maple Extra
The results are two styles, the Slim Fit 1979  – LA, and the Straight Cut 1941 – LA.  Each pair of jeans are made from premium 13.5oz selvedge denim, are lined with Dupont Kevlar with removable Forcefield CE knee and hip armour. The jeans are cut and sewn in Downtown LA. The Straight Cut comes with a cinch back, and the Slim Fit with a neat rear spanner pocket.
The finishing details really work, from the flowing double M stitch on the pockets and the red embroidered maple leaf, to the generous sized ticket pocket and deep pocket lining. The Kevlar is stitched along the main seams of the jeans, so there’s none of the nasty paneling that plague inferior armoured jeans.
I took delivery of my Slim Fits in December, and have worn them non-stop on the bike ever since. Initially a snug true measurement fit, they’ve bedded in just nicely, and like any pair of good selvedge jeans, they just get better the more they’re worn. I’ve just dry-cleaned them for the first time, and they’re developing great fade lines, which is important to denim geeks like me. (You can stick them in the washing machine if you want). They come long in the leg, allowing for a healthy turn up!
    HF_ds_13
One of the advantages of the Kevlar lining is warmth. They keep me insulated on the bike more so than my 25oz premium brand Japanese denim, and although not claiming to be water proof, they keep out the wet to a decent degree. Dave claims they breathe well in warmer weather, and so far he’s delivered on his promises!
These are a great jean off the cycle too. I wear them at work, out in the evenings, and working on the bike. The knee protection is discrete and slim, so ideal for kneeling on when you’re poking about inside your bike.
At last a stylish quality denim that looks sharp and keeps you safe.

UGLYBROS TON UP-G WOMENS MOTO PANTS
The Ton Up-G are fashion/fusion moto pants for women bikers that offer CE approved protection and seriously good looks. So often women’s riding gear is a reluctant after-thought from manufacturers, resulting in poorly conceived ill-fitting versions of the men’s product.
    Photo Oct 06, 3 50 53 PM
Not with UglyBros, who have designed a pair of female riding pants from scratch, taking a current fashion cut, adding on-style detailing, and manufacturing in tough materials. UglyBros were founded over a decade ago from a desire to fuse protective motorcycle gear with high-style fashion garments.
    Photo Sep 30, 6 53 42 PM
The Ton Up-G is made of 12oz heavy weight bonded denim, lined with a napped polyester thermo lining that provides a softer feel and added insulation during colder weather. An unlined version is offered in the Guardian variation. They come with CE approved knee and hip protectors. The knee protectors are easily removed on-the-go via outer pockets.
The Ton Up-G is available in black, and the Guardian-G in indigo. These look killer both on and off the bike.

COTTER PIN – THE ORIGINAL ADVENTURE ROLL
Whether it’s to bed down on at this years Wheels and Waves, or to kneel on at the side of the A12 in the pissing rain trying to fix your bad-tempered ride, Cotter Pin’s Original Adventure Roll is a handy piece of kit when venturing further than the local cafe.
    Cotter_Pin_Gear-ThEAdventure_Roll-2_large
A biker version of the cowboy blanket, one side is water-repellant waxed canvas, the other side 100% wool. It features six brass grommets so it can be tied down, or up, or sideways if need be. A fabric multi-tool, this can be used a bed rest, pillow, emergency lean-to, work blanket, a cover, or to lay out camping gear. With the good weather coming, you can spread out the picnic on your Sunday ride.

Their designs are practical, purposeful, and produced with quality craftsmanship; unfussy and to the point. Just how we like it.

    ALPINE A110 CUTAWAY

    Alpine A110
Personally, I think the Alpine A110 is one of the most beautiful automotive designs of all time. It’s not a particularly famous car and it doesn’t garner the same praise as the E-Type Jaguar or Porsche 911 models that were released in the same era, but those who are familiar with the quirky rear-engined French car from the early ’60s are almost invariably in love with it.
Weighing it at a svelte 1199lbs (544kgs) the fibreglass bodied Alpine A110 had a rear-mounted Renault 1108cc Straight-4 producing 98hp at the rear wheels, if you were just looking at the spec-sheet you probably wouldn’t guess that this was one of the most successful rally cars of its era. It won the very first World Rally Championship and didn’t begin to see a significant decline until the Lancia Stratos was unleashed in 1974 – a car that had been purpose built to challenge the feisty little Alpine A110.

The summer of 1975 saw Scandinavian model Winnie Hollman accompany photographer Helmut Newton on a maritime tour of the Cannes coastline – delighting not only the renowned cameraman, but also the crew of a passing boat in the process…
Taken as part of his ‘White Women’ series, the image is typically Newtonian – a cross between eroticism and luxurious decadence. ‘Winnie off the Coast of Cannes’, estimated to fetch 8,000-12,000 USD, is one of several Newtons set to go under the gavel at the Phillips auction on 1 April 2014 in New York.

Marquez: ‘I think it will be a great race for the fans’ : « Une très bonne surprise »

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda Team, QAT Q2

Marc Marquez bounced back from a broken leg just six weeks ago to claim the first pole position of 2014 at Losail on Saturday.

The Spanish youngster improved the setting of his Repsol Honda machine over the weekend as he returned to the front of the MotoGP™ grid at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar.
The 2013 World Champion found a big improvement in Free Practice 4 that allowed him to overcome the testing advantage of the Satellite and Open bikes. Fortunately his leg injury did not prove a major hindrance in the practice sessions.
Marquez posted his pole time of 1’54.507 on his seventh and last lap of the session, bumping down Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) to second and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) to third. His time was 0.200s faster than Jorge Lorenzo’s pole position time from 2013.
“I’m very happy, after the injury and the loss of half the preseason it’s very important to be here on the front row. But the pole position makes me happy. The satellite riders did a test here and I don’t think they’ve changed their bikes much since FP1, but step-by-step we’ve improved. There’s still some space to the perfect set up,” he commented
Looking ahead, “Tomorrow is the most important; it will be very hard as there are many riders on the same pace. Physical condition will also be difficult for me, as I don’t have full power in my leg so I have to use more arms and this is quite hard over long distance. I think it will be a great race for the fans.”

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda Team, QAT Q2

MOTO GP :Pole for Marquez for first race of 2014 / Márquez en pole au Qatar suite aux deux chutes d’A. Espargaró

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda Team, QAT Q2

World Champion Marc Marquez will head the grid for Sunday’s first MotoGP™ race of the year at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar with Alvaro Bautista and Bradley Smith also qualifying on the front row.

Despite only returning to riding his Repsol Honda machine on Thursday after breaking his leg in preseason training, Marquez showed his rivals he means business again in 2014 with a great charge to pole with a 1’54.507 lap.
GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Bautista had provisional pole but eventually qualified second by a +0.057s margin, whilst Smith was also close to the top spot missing out by less than a tenth.
That result is Smith’s first ever premier class front row qualifying effort and was a great response to his FP3 horror crash.
Another solid run for Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) sees him head the second row, with Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) managing to pull something out of the bag in fifth and sixth respectively having struggled for much of the weekend so far.
Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) leads the third row with a time just 0.364s off the pace, with Q1 participant Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team) improving to eighth.
A disastrous session for Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) saw him qualify ninth, having walked away from two crashes, appearing to crack under the pressure of Q2. He had led the way earlier in the weekend and was furious with himself after both falls.
Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) starts in the unfamiliar territory of row four, ahead of Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3).
Valentino Rossi, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP, QAT Q2

The Moto2™ qualifying session at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar saw Esteve Rabat (Marc VDS Racing Team) take pole, ahead of Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP) and Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia).

Alex Rins, Estrella Galicia 0,0, QAT QP
The Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar Moto3™ qualifying session saw Alex Rins secure pole position for the first race of 2014, with his Estrella Galicia 0,0 teammate Alex Marquez and Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Ajo) joining him on the front row of the grid.

    HONDA NX650 CUSTOM

    NX650 custom motorcycle
Many builders cite similar reasons for taking up their craft, one of them being a growing dissatisfaction with modern motorcycle design. This, and an over-active imagination, led Simon Garcia to tear into his 1989 Honda NX650—and inject a little style and charm of his own.
Originally from a small village in Normandy, France, Simon spent his younger days studying motorcycle mechanics and restoring old bikes and cars. Tired of how “plastic” and “charmless” motorcycles had become, he eventually decided to build something that would appeal to his sensibilities.
    NX650 custom motorcycle
“The idea was to design a bike that does not look like any other, with unique features,” he explains, “while spending as little money as possible”.
Simon chose Honda’s NX650 Dominator as the base for his project. Since he’d completed his apprenticeship at a Honda dealership, he was familiar with the model and liked its simplicity. The donor he found was pretty banged up though—it’d been out of commission for 13 years with a busted crankshaft, cylinder and head. So Simon gave it a full engine rebuild with all-new components, and rewired the bike for good measure.
    NX650 custom motorcycle
The rear end received the most noticeable changes, starting with a bespoke swingarm that could accommodate dual shocks, to achieve a more vintage look. Simon then redesigned the subframe—cutting, bending and welding the tubes no less than eleven times before he was happy. For the seat, he reshaped the stock Honda pan and foam to save costs, before having it covered in brown leather with red stitching.
    NX650 custom motorcycle
A Yamaha XT500 fuel tank was sourced via eBay; Simon just had to remove a couple of dings before adapting it to fit the NX650′s frame. Three stripes were added to the bare metal in the same colors as those on the legendary Honda RC30. The frame was sandblasted and finished in anthracite grey satin. All colors were selected from original Honda colour codes.
Simon then shortened the front suspension slightly and fitted black Excel Takasago rims with Dunlop K180 tires. He also fabricated new stainless steel exhaust headers, adding anAkrapovic muffler from a Honda Hornet, and handcrafted the side and front number plates from aluminum. Finishing kit includes Renthal bars and grips.
    NX650 custom motorcycle
The build was completed just three days before Simon left France to relocate to Sydney. He was drawn there by Australia’s laid-back nature, which resonates with him. “Nobody is sad, nobody is stressed or pessimistic—here, a smile is a way of life!”
Simon hopes to take on more builds in the future, not only for himself but for potential customers as well. Considering that his first build is loaded with equal doses of quirkiness and craftsmanship, I look forward to watching his career unfold.

Lorenzo et Rossi sauvent les meubles

Valentino Rossi, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP, QAT FP3
Jorge Lorenzo left it late in FP3, eventually taking seventh to secure a spot in Saturday’s Q2 session with the top ten riders for Sunday’s Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar.
Lorenzo battled a lack of grip on the Losail circuit as he struggled to set up his YZR-M1 for the first race of 2014. Having completed the second practice of the weekend in 11th earlier in the evening the double MotoGP champion went in to the third session sitting outside the top ten.
As the minutes wound down a mid-session smattering of rain threatened to complicate matters further. In the final moments Lorenzo rose to the occasion under pressure, pulling out a 1’55.495 lap on the medium rear tyre to climb several places and take seventh at the end of the practice, securing a place in the second qualifying session.
He summed things up briefly, stating, “We had the same feeling today with little grip on the rear with the soft tyre. We tried to adapt to the situation and the positive thing is that we are closer to the faster riders with race pace, maybe three or four tenths instead of one second so let’s see if tomorrow we can improve a bit more.
Jorge Lorenzo, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP, QAT FP3

Eve Concept by Bandit9 Motorcycles: Good morning, Saigon

In Southeast Asia, the streetscape is dominated not by cars, but by motorcycles. In extreme cases, they’re even used as a mode of transport for the whole family and fitted with roof-racks – but this Vietnam-designed bike is more of an out-and-out status symbol…
Named ‘Concept Eve’, the striking bike is the latest product from Saigon-based outfit Bandit9, and is based on a 1967 Honda SS. The long tank/seat combination is one of the many handmade chrome parts that sees this bike test the fine balance between usable product and work of art – but that only heightens its charming appeal. No more than nine ‘Eves’ will be produced, with engines of 90cc and 120cc  available, and prices starting at $4,600.

Espargaro completes clean sweep after heading third session / Aleix Espargaró survole les derniers essais du vendredi à Losail

Aleix Espargaro, NGM Forward Racing, QAT FP3

An exciting FP3 session at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar saw Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) on top again, outpacing Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) in the top three.

The revelation of the winter and of the Qatar weekend so far, Espargaro posted a 1’54.773 best time on the ‘Open’ Forward Yamaha, with Iannone and Bautista trailing him by 0.413s and 0.467s respectively. The non-Factory riders who tested at Losail two weeks ago are enjoying this Grand Prix so far, as the usual order has been upset in the desert.
Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso and World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) completed the top five, neither of them having attended the test visit.
There was a big crash for Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Bradley Smith at turn 5, but the Englishman limped away from the huge highside and was able to post the sixth best time of the evening.
Former World title winner Jorge Lorenzo’s woes continued as he looked uncomfortable outside the top ten for most of the session and he was potentially heading for Q1 participation before pulling out a 1'55.495 to go seventh.
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) was eighth on Friday courtesy of his best FP2 time, whilst Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) squeezed into the top ten, Rossi with a late best time in the final minutes.
Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and the man he replaced on the Tech3 Yamaha, Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), were the two big names to miss out on automatic Q2 participation. Crutchlow walked away from a crash at turn 10 and will look to improve on Saturday
