Dakar2013, Final Report: 11 Dakar wins for Peterhansel / Et de onze pour « Peter »

At the wheel of his ALL4 Racing Mini, Stéphane Peterhansel has claimed his 11th Dakar Rally victory – his fifth success in the Cars class alongside co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret. Giniel de Villiers wound up second overall ahead of Russian Leonid Novitskiy in third. Michelin celebrated its Dakar return in the Cars category by claiming the top seven places in the final classification.

Giniel de Villiers termine 2e devant le Russe Leonid Novitski. Michelin signe son retour sur le Dakar en catégorie « Auto » en prenant les sept 1ères places du classement général.

“It’s always a special feeling,” remarked Stéphane Peterhansel at the end of the last stage, which took place between Santiago and Valparaiso in the Hacienda Los Aromos region. “Like last year, we didn’t experience the slightest mechanical issue, which allowed us to concentrate fully on the driving and navigation. I owe a huge ‘thank you’ to the entire X-Raid team, which has been competing at the highest level now for ten years. It was never going to be an easy event up against the buggies, Toyotas and even the Hummer, so we focused on driving the best we could and just enjoying it. Our consistency was critical.”

Stéphane Peterhansel assumed the lead at the end of the third stage – and never again relinquished it. After Nasser Al-Attiyah was forced into retirement the day after the ‘rest day’, Peterhansel simply had to control his advantage. The Qatar Red Bull team – very much a contender at the beginning of the rally – had already lost Carlos Sainz during the sixth stage due to engine failure.

Fellow former winner Giniel de Villiers (Toyota/Michelin) practically matched Peterhansel’s consistency, but he got lost for half an hour in the Peruvian dunes: “The car performed well, but there were occasions when we were out of luck.” He ultimately finished second ahead of Leonid Novitskiy, who ascended the podium for the first time in what was his seventh Dakar appearance. Spaniard Nani Roma tallied the equal-highest number of stage wins, and completed the trio of ALL4 Racing Minis, all shod with Michelin’s Latitude C rubber.

Orlando Terranova raised his game from Peru onwards and rounded out the final top five in his X-raid prepared BMW. He finished ahead of Portugal’s Carlos Sousa (Great Wall) who, with 14 Dakar outings now under his belt, rated the 2013 edition as particularly technically demanding. Guerlain Chicherit was very quick, but a lack of consistency and a touch of unreliability prevented him from featuring higher up in the overall standings. He wound up eighth behind his team-mate Ronan Chabot, who was very much on-form in the Peruvian dunes. Pascal Thomasse (Buggy) and Lucio Alvarez (Toyota) completed the final top ten.

« C’est toujours un moment particulier », commentait Stéphane Peterhansel à l’arrivée de la dernière spéciale, entre Santiago et Valparaiso, sur les terres de l’Hacienda Los Aromos. « Comme l’an passé, nous n’avons connu aucun souci mécanique, ce qui nous a permis de nous concentrer sur le pilotage et la navigation. Je remercie vraiment toute l’équipe X-raid présente au plus haut niveau de la discipline depuis dix ans. Cette victoire n’était pas gagnée d’avance avec les Buggies, les Toyota ou encore le Hummer. Alors nous avons essayé de rouler le mieux possible et de se faire plaisir. Nous avons été réguliers. »

En effet, Stéphane Peterhansel n’a remporté qu’une seule spéciale, mais il a pris les commandes à l’issue de la 3^e étape pour ne plus les lâcher. Après l’abandon de Nasser Al-Attiyah au lendemain de la journée de repos, Stéphane n’avait plus qu’à gérer sa course. L’équipe Qatar Red Bull, très en verve en début de rallye, avait déjà perdu Carlos Sainz dans la 6^e étape (moteur).

Autre ancien vainqueur au départ, Giniel de Villiers (Toyota/Michelin) fut lui aussi régulier, mais il s’est égaré une demi-heure dans les dunes péruviennes. « La voiture a bien progressé, mais nous avons manqué de chance par moments. » Il termine 2^e devant Leonid Novitskiy qui signe son 1^er podium pour son 7^e Dakar. L’Espagnol Nani Roma (co-meilleur réalisateur avec quatre victoires) complète un tir groupé des Mini ALL4 Racing chaussées de pneu Michelin Latitude C.

Orlando Terranova a hausé le rythme après le Pérou et complète le top-5 sur son BMW préparé par X-raid. Il devance le Portugais Carlos Sousa (Great Wall) qui, du haut de ses 14 Dakar, a jugé cette édition très technique. Très véloce, Guerlain Chicherit a manqué de régularité et d’un peu de fiabilité pour mieux figurer au général. Il termine 7^e derrière son équipier Ronan Chabot, très à l’aise dans les dunes du Pérou. Pascal Thomasse (Buggy) et Lucio Alvarez (Toyota) complètent le top-10.

Etape 13 : Copiapo-La Serena (735 km)

The penultimate stage of the 2013 Dakar featured a little bit of all the main types of surface encountered in the course of the event since its move to South America. The conditions ranged from dunes, to fast and twisty rocky tracks, some off-road action and fesh-fesh…

The end of the first section was located alongside Ruta 5, the four-lane highway that runs from Copiapo to La Serena. After 246km of competitive action, Kurt Caselli was the day’s fastest rider, 19s ahead of Despres and 42s clear of Lopez. At Km396, however, the American’s KTM/Michelin was reported to have stopped with an engine problem.

Lopez set off from this morning’s re-start in Copiapo intent on stealing second place from Faria. The Portuguese rider started at a quick pace and was second behind Barreda at Km69. He was still second at Km153, just before the dunes, but it was here that the Chilean began to push before keeping up the pressure over the second section…

He went on to claim the stage by a margin of 5m25s over Cyril Despres and has now closed to within 8m15s of the event’s four-time winner, but Saturday’s programme only includes 111 timed kilometres… “Unless something dramatic happens, I can’t win; but coming second would be a great result,” smiled the Chilean at the bivouac in La Serena. “Tomorrow, the rally arrives in my home city, Santiago. I’m sure it will be a fantastic occasion.”

“There are no ‘straightforward’ stages on the Dakar,” noted Cyril Despres who appears to be on target for a fifth outright win. His team-mate Ruben Faria is still on the provisional podium, despite dropping almost quarter of an hour today. Slovakia’s Ivan Jakes is fourth and is hoping to reach the finish in that position after three consecutive retirements.

Paulo Gonçalves was third fastest on SS14 for Husqvarna/Michelin, ahead of the two Joans: Pedrero and Barreda.

Cette pénultième spéciale 2013 offrait un tracé varié, représentatif du rallye avec des dunes, des pistes caillouteuses rapides et sinueuses, du hors-piste, du fesh-fesh… Bref, un condensé de Dakar version sud-américaine.

La fin de la 1^ère partie était située au bord de la Ruta 5, une double voie reliant Copiapo à La Serena. Là, après 246 km de spéciale, c’est Kurt Caselli qui tenait le meilleur chrono pour 19 secondes devant Despres et 42 sur Lopez. Mais au km 396, la KMT/Michelin de l’Américain était signalée arrêtée en raison de problèmes moteur.

Ce matin au départ de Copiapo, « Chaleco » Lopez n’avait qu’un objectif : prendre la 2^e place du classement général à Ruben Faria. Le Portugais était pourtant parti sur un rythme élevé et pointait en 2^e position derrière Barreda au km 69. Il était toujours 2^e au km 153 avant d’attaquer les dunes. Et c’est là, dans les derniers « sables » de cette édition, que le Chilien a porté son attaque avant de confirmer dans la 2^e partie, sur une piste roulante et bosselée.

« Chaleco » Lopez a remporté cette spéciale avec 5min25s sur Cyril Despres et revient à 8min15s du quadruple vainqueur. Demain, il reste 111 km chronométrés. « C’est impossible, à la régulière, mais une 2^e place serait déjà fabuleuse », déclarait le Chilien devant une nuée de journalistes au bivouac de La Serena. « Demain, on arrive à Santiago, chez moi, ça va être un grand moment. »

« Au Dakar, il n’y a pas de petite spéciale », confiait à son tour Cyril Despres, en route vers un 5^esuccès. Son porteur d’eau, Ruben Faria, qui a perdu près d’un quart d’heure aujourd’hui, est toujours sur le podium provisoire devant le Slovaque Ivan Jakes qui pourrait réaliser un excellent résultat demain après trois abandons consécutifs en début de rallye.

Paulo Gonçalves a signé un nouveau podium en spéciale sur sa Husqvarna/Michelin. Il a devancé les deux Joan, Pedrero et Barreda, une nouvelle fois parti très vite ce matin.

Dakar2013, étape 12 : Roma s’impose à Copiapo / a stage win for Roma in Copiapo

Nani Roma (Mini/Michelin) profited from today’s action to claim his third stage win of the event. The Spaniard, who was followed over the line by Robby Gordon (Hummer), has gained a footing on the provisional podium alongside Peterhansel and De Villiers.

Etape 12 : Fiambala-Copiapo (715 km)

Copiapo seems such a long way from Fiambala: approximately 500km, half of which was on dirt and included interminable climbs, steep descents and a bumpy asphalt road that just never seemed to end. However, the overnight camp situated some 10km from Copiapo sits in the middle of sumptuous dunes which made the long journey well worth the effort.

This year, the drive down the awesome dune that towers over the camp was not on the menu. Instead, the finish was located about four kilometres away, on a dirt track in the middle of a vast deserted plateau. Meanwhile, this was the last predominantly sandy stage of the 2013 event and consequently perhaps the final chance for the USA’s Robby Gordon to profit from the potential of his Hummer.

Indeed, the flamboyant American spent most of the stage in the lead – at least up to Km222 – but he was beaten at the very end by Nani Roma who took advantage of the last 40km of stony ground to catch and pass the Hummer. Roma’s win takes him past his team-mate Leonid Novitskiy to third overall. Novitskiy was only ninth today as he recovered from the emotions of Wednesday when his Mini was swept away by a river.

Giniel de Villiers was third-fastest on the stage, just 7s behind Gordon. He still figures in second position overall behind Stéphane Peterhansel who collected the fourth best time on SS12. Guerlain Chicherit fell back from seventh place after encountering transmission trouble, but Orly Terranova is still fifth ahead of Carlos Sousa (Great Wall) and Ronan Chabot whose SMG team-mate Bernard Errandonea got stuck in sand along with Christian Lavieille.

The Truck class saw Karginov and Mardeev secure a one-two finish today for Kamaz/Michelin, ahead of the Michelin-equipped Ivecos of De Rooy and Biasion. The provisional overall top-three is monopolised by Kamaz drivers Nikolaev, Mardeev and Karginov. De Rooy is fifth, behind Kolomy.

Que c’est loin, Copiapo, quand on vient de Fiambala : 500 km, dont la moitié en terre, des ascensions interminables, des descentes « en rappel » et une route asphalte bosselée qui n’en finit pas. Mais le bivouac de Copiapo, situé au milieu des dunes, à une dizaine de km de la ville, est toujours aussi somptueux.

Cette année, les concurrents ne dévalent pas la grande dune derrière le bivouac. L’arrivée est jugée à 4 km, dans un vaste plateau désertique, sur des pistes caillouteuses. Cette spéciale, la dernière « sable » du rallye, était peut-être la dernière occasion pour l’Américain Robby Gordon de se mettre en évidence sur son Hummer.

Le généreux pilote américain a longtemps fait la course en tête – jusqu’au km 222 au moins -, mais il a été coiffé en fin de spéciale par l’Espagnol Nani Roma qui a profité des 40 derniers km sur pistes caillouteuses pour fondre sur le Hummer. Roma prend la 3^e place du général à son équipier Leonid Novitskiy, seulement 9^e aujourd’hui après ses péripéties de la veille (sa Mini a été emportée dans une rivière).

Giniel de Villiers a signé le 3^e temps à 7 secondes de Gordon. Il reste bien sûr 2^e du général derrière Stéphane Peterhansel, 4^e aujourd’hui. Guerlain Chicherit a perdu sa 7^e place au général en raison de problèmes de transmission. « Orly » Terranova est toujours 5^e devant Carlos Sousa (Great Wall) et Ronan Chabot. Son équipier Bernard Errandonea (Buggy SMG) et Christian Lavieille se sont ensablés.

En Camions, les Kamaz/Michelin ont signé un doublé aujourd’hui, avec Karginov et Mardeev, devant deux Iveco/Michelin (De Rooy et Biasion). Au général, trois Kamaz sont leaders avec Nikolaev, Mardeev et Karginov. De Rooy est toujours 5^e derrière Kolomy.

After their watery ordeal on Saturday, the Dakar’s ‘car’ competitors have been recovering today in San Miguel de Tucuman, the city which sparked off Argentina’s independence movement in 1816… The ‘bivouac’ is based at the hippodrome.

Sauvés des eaux hier, les concurrents Autos ont bien mérité une journée de repos sur ce Dakar. San Miguel de Tucuman, la ville d’où partit la fronde qui conduisit à l’indépendance de l’Argentine, en 1816, accueille le bivouac sur son hippodrome.

Certains se souviendront longtemps de la 8^e Many competitors will remember the eighth stage of the 2013 Dakar for years to come, including Guillerme Spinelli whose Mitsubishi was swept away by a raging torrent during the test. The crew had to be airlifted free of the river and the Petrobras mechanics who went to retrieve the car only arrived in San Miguel at 6am today…

The organisers were forced to neutralise the stage at Passage Control 2 and gave the same time as Stéphane Peterhansel to all his direct rivals, including Nasser Al-Attiyah, whose buggy was caught between rocks, and Giniel de Villiers who was blocked by the torrent. As a result, there are no changes at the top of the leaderboard which Stéphane Peterhansel still tops, 3m14s clear of Al-Attiyah. Giniel de Villiers is third (+44m3s).

Qatar Red Bull dominated the rally’s early stages, taking four straight wins in the Peruvian dunes before Mini/Michelin claimed two victories thanks to Nani Roma and Peterhansel. Guerlain Chicherit (Buggy) has also picked up a deserved win, and SMG has three buggies in the provisional top 10.

The Mini ALL4 Racings have been extremely reliable so far and three cars figure in the top 10. Toyota Hilux hasn’t had any big difficulties, either, although Lucio Alvarez fell back several hours following a heavy front-end landing (broken wishbone). The new Red Bull buggies have been competitive, but early leader Carlos Sainz was side-lined by engine failure after repeated electronics problems.

The top 10 is rounded off by Portugal’s Carlos Sousa (Great Wall), ahead of Pascal Thomasse (MD buggy) and Erik Wevers (Ford) who is spearheading Riwald Team’s effort after the withdrawal of Ten Brinke. Hummer’s Robby Gordon is as fast as ever, but also inconsistent (roll on SS4) and is 23^rd overall. The T2 Production class is led by Spain’s Xavier Foj. The Toyota driver is an hour clear of Abdullah Al-Héraiz (Toyota) and Nicolas Gibon (Toyota). There are still 106 cars in the running after the 5,000km covered since last weekend’s start in Lima, Peru.

Stage 8 was cancelled for the Truck competitors after certain roads were badly damaged by storms. Gerard de Rooy (Iveco/Michelin) got stuck in sand early in the event but recovered the lead after Loprais (6^th) suffered electrical trouble, after Stacey rolled and after Biasion was slowed by a power steering problem. Russia’s Nikolaev (Kamaz) is second (+22m8s), ahead of Kolomy (+41m25s). Kamaz has three trucks in the top five, while the De Rooy team has lost two of the five Ivecos it entered.

L’équipage a dû être hélitreuillé sur la berge. Les mécaniciens du team Petrobras, partis récupérer la voiture, ont rallié le bivouac à 6h00 ce matin…

Les organisateurs ont neutralisé la spéciale au CP2 et donné le temps de Stéphane Peterhansel à ses challengers directs, Nasser Al-Attiyah, dont le Buggy était coincé entre des rochers, et Giniel de Villiers, bloqué par le torrent. Pas de changement donc en tête du classement général avec Stéphane Peterhansel qui compte 3min14s d’avance sur Al-Attiyah. Giniel de Villiers est toujours 3^e à 44min03s…

L’équipe Qatar Red Bull a dominé le début de rallye avec quatre victoires consécutives dans les dunes péruviennes avant deux succès de Mini/Michelin avec Nani Roma et Peterhansel, puis une victoire méritée pour Guerlain Chicherit (Buggy) et le team SMG qui compte trois Buggy dans le top-10.

Jusque-là, les Mini ALL4 Racing ont fait preuve d’une excellente fiabilité et trois figurent dans le top-10. Pas de gros soucis non plus sur les Toyota Hilux : Lucio Alvarez a perdu plusieurs heures après un atterrissage brutal sur l’avant (triangle cassé). Les nouveaux Buggies Red Bull sont performants, mais Carlos Sainz, 1^er leader du rallye, a dû abandonner (moteur cassé) après d’incessants problèmes électroniques.

Le Portugais Carlos Sousa ferme le top-10 sur son Great Wall devant Pascal Thomasse (Buggy MD) et Erik Wevers (Ford), promu leader du Riwald Team après le forfait de Ten Brinke. Toujours aussi rapide, mais irrégulier (tonneau étape 4), Robby Gordon est 23^e sur son Hummer. En catégorie T2 (Production), l’Espagnol Xavier Foj (Toyota) est leader avec près d’une heure d’avance sur Abdullah Al-Héraiz (Toyota) et Nicolas Gibon (Toyota). Il reste 106 véhicules en course après 5000 km parcourus depuis Lima.

En Camions, la 8^e étape a été annulée (piste dévastées par les intempéries). Ensablé quelques minutes en début de rallye, Gerard de Rooy (Iveco/Michelin) a repris le leadership après les ennuis de Loprais (6^e, problème électrique) et le tonneau de Stacey. Le Russe Nikolaev (Kamaz) est 2^e à 22min08s devant Kolomy (+41min25s). L’équipe Kamaz compte trois camions dans le top-5, le team De Rooy n’a plus que trois Iveco sur les cinq engagés.

Dakar, étape 6 : Al-Attiyah revient sur Peterhansel-Dakar – Al-Attiyah slashes the gap to Peterhansel

At the end of the first Chilean stage of the 2013 Dakar Rally, Nasser Al-Attiyah has fought back to less than two minutes adrift of Stéphane Peterhansel, who retains the overall lead. Robby Gordon went third-quickest again, whilst Nani Roma and Giniel De Villiers found themselves stuck in the sand.

A l’issue de la première étape chilienne du Dakar 2013, Nasser Al-Attiyah est revenu à moins de deux minutes de Stéphane Peterhansel, toujours leader au général. Robby Gordon a signé le 3e meilleur temps alors que Roma et De Villiers se sont ensablés.

Etape 6 : Arica-Calama (768 km)

The end of this sixth stage of the rally was situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres and around 30 kilometres from Calama, very close to Chuquicamata and its mining machinery that made Gordon’s monstrous Hummer appear almost like a scale model in comparison.

The American set the third-fastest time today, despite losing some ground at the start of the stage. In the dunes near Iquique, overall leader Stéphane Peterhansel found himself buried in the sand for a few minutes: “I got trapped in some very soft sand, 800 metres in front of Nani Roma,” the Frenchman explained at the finish. “I had to have two efforts at getting out of the dune again, which cost me in the region of three minutes.”

Roma, for his part, found himself stranded there for quite some time, in the process inadvertently delaying Giniel de Villiers by ten minutes: “My car tipped up in the dune and I saw Nani stuck in the sand below; I had to brake hard to avoid him, and that meant I got stuck too. Later in the stage, we then had to change a wheel,” revealed the South African, who nonetheless maintained his third position in the overall standings ahead of Leonid Novitskiy.

In winning the stage with an 8m36s margin over Peterhansel, Nasser Al-Attiyah made significant gains in the overall classification. The Qatari has recovered from his earlier misfortunes to lie less than two minutes shy of the leader. By stark contrast, his team-mate Carlos Sainz was forced to retire from the event with engine problems.

In the ‘Truck’ class, after Gerard de Rooy had found himself stuck in the sand two days ago and the dramas that befell Ales Loprais, Hans Stacey rolled his Iveco/Michelin in the Iquique dunes. There were fortunately no injuries to either driver or co-driver, but the pair will be going no further. Whilst leading the stage, Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) was reported to have stopped at 384km.

L’arrivée de cette 6^e étape était jugée à 3000 mètres d’altitude, à une trentaine de kilomètres de Calama, tout près de Chuquicamata et ses engins miniers reléguant le monstrueux Hummer de Gordon au rang de modèle réduit.

L’Américain a signé le 3^e meilleur temps aujourd’hui, malgré avoir concédé quelques minutes en début de spéciale. Dans les dunes d’Iquique, le leader du classement général Stéphane Peterhansel s’est ensablé quelques minutes : « je me suis fait piéger par du sable très mou, 800 m avant Nani Roma », expliquait le Français à l’arrivée. « J’ai dû m’y prendre à deux reprises pour passer la dune, j’ai perdu trois minutes environ. »

Nani Roma est quant à lui resté de longues minutes dans ce piège de sable et coûta, involontairement, dix minutes à Giniel de Villiers : « j’ai basculé derrière la dune et j’ai vu Nani ensablé en contrebas, j’ai dû freiner fort pour l’éviter et je me suis ensablé à mon tour. Ensuite, on a changé une roue en spéciale », commentait le Sud-Africain qui préserve sa 3^e place au général devant Leonid Novitskiy.

En remportant la spéciale avec 8min36s d’avance sur Peterhansel, Nasser Al-Attiyah a réalisé une excellente opération au classement général. Le Qatari est revenu à moins de deux minutes du leader. En revanche, son équipier Carlos Sainz a dû abandonner (moteur cassé).

En Camion, après l’ensablement de Gerard de Rooy avant-hier et les ennuis d’Ales Loprais, Hans Stacey est parti en tonneau par l’avant dans les dunes d’Iquique. Pas de mal pour l’équipage, mais l’Iveco/Michelin n’ira pas plus loin. Leader de l’étape, Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) était signalé arrêté au km 384.

Dakar, étape 5 : Première victoire de Mini/Michelin

To celebrate the Dakar’s arrival in Chile, Nani Roma claimed the first victory of 2013 for ALL4 Racing Mini – and Michelin’s first stage win on the event since 2001! Better yet for the X-Raid team, overall rally leader Stéphane Peterhansel made it a one-two, whilst back on all four wheels again, Robby Gordon’s Hummer was third-quickest.

Pour fêter l’arrivée du Dakar au Chili, Nani Roma a offert à la Mini ALL4 Racing ses premiers lauriers en 2013 et à Michelin sa première victoire d’étape depuis 2001 ! L’équipe X-Raid a d’ailleurs signé un doublé avec Stéphane Peterhansel. De retour sur ses roues, le Hummer de Robby Gordon a signé le 3e temps.

Etape 5 : Arequipa-Arica (509 km)

For the cars, the start of the fifth stage was 284km from Arequipa, on the edge of the Pan-American Highway on a vast desert plateau. On the start-line, we saw Robby Gordon’s Hummer and the buggy of Carlos Sainz, ready to attack the 172 competitive kilometres that they would go on to complete with respectively the third and fifth-fastest times.

Several kilometres further on, we came across the cars again at the Passage Control that traversed the Pan-American Highway before Tacna, still surrounded by the same mineral vastness. There, at 118km into the stage, Spaniard Nani Roma was already in the lead, ahead of Giniel de Villiers and team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel.

“It was a stage with a lot of variety, and I really enjoyed it,” declared the winner at the finish in Arica. “The first 50 kilometres were rocky and bumpy, then there was a good section along a dry river bed where you could drive like in the WRC, and finally there was some ‘fesh-fesh’ close to the end.”

Second-quickest today, Stéphane Peterhansel has yet to win a stage in the 2013 edition of the Dakar, but he will nonetheless head into Chile firmly ensconced at the top of the leaderboard with an advantage of almost 10 minutes over closest pursuer Nasser Al-Attiyah. The Qatari began the stage in fine form, but gradually lost time and ultimately wound up 6m1s adrift of Peterhansel.

More than 33 minutes shy of the leader (the time he lost in the Nazca dunes), Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) continues to hold the final podium position, four minutes clear of Leonid Novitskiy (Mini).

In his Aston Martin-engined Mitsubishi prototype, Brazilian Guillerme Spinelli lies eighth overall, ahead of Orlando Terranova (BMW M3) and Carlos Sousa (Great Wall). Guerlain Chicherit lost a quarter of an hour with a power steering problem, but the trio of SMG buggies (Chicherit, Chabot and Errandonéa) nevertheless remains inside the overall top ten.

In the ‘Truck’ class, the leadership changed hands yesterday as Gerard De Rooy (Iveco/Michelin) found himself stuck in the sand between two dunes, allowing team-mate Hans Stacey to move past into the lead.

Pour les autos, le départ de la 5^e spéciale était à 284 km d’Arequipa, au bord de la Panaméricaine, sur un vaste plateau désertique. Nous avons vu le Hummer de Robby Gordon et le Buggy de Carlos Sainz sur la ligne, prêts à bondir à l’assaut des 172 km chronométrés qu’ils ont finalement achevés aux 3^e et 5^e places.

Quelques kilomètres plus loin, nous avons retrouvé les autos au CP intermédiaire qui coupait la Panamericana avant Tacna, toujours dans cette immensité minérale. Là, au km 118, l’Espagnol Nani Roma était déjà leader devant Giniel de Villiers et son équipier Stéphane Peterhansel.

« J’ai bien aimé cette spéciale très variée » a commenté le vainqueur au bivouac d’Arica. « Les 50 premiers kilomètres étaient rocailleux et bosselés, puis on a eu une belle piste dans un oued avec du pilotage style WRC, et pour fini, du fesh-fesh près de l’arrivée. »

Deuxième aujourd’hui, Stéphane Peterhansel n’a toujours pas remporté d’étape sur ce Dakar 2013, mais il entre au Chili en tête avec près de 10 minutes d’avance sur Nasser Al-Attiyah. Le Qatari était parti vite dans cette spéciale, mais a rétrogradé peu à peu pour concéder 6min01s au vainqueur.

A plus de 33 minutes du leader (le temps perdu dans les dunes de Nazca), Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) pointe sur le podium provisoire du général avec quatre minutes d’avance sur Leonid Novitskiy (Mini).
